Don, thanks so much for the message. You are right, Janet Hu is one of the biggest success stories in a region with plenty of them. We are well aware of her; in fact, she was a featured part of story we did in February http://reachforthewall.com/2009/02/07/the-nations-talent-pool/. I am sure we will have a lot more to say about Janet as she advances through the sport!

I recently visited the Mosby Woods pool with my granson and notice that the pool’s firl records are dominated by Janet Hu … and that all her records are or where NVSL reacords. How about an artical on this amazing swimmer. This girl has now set at least 15 NVSL records. I can’t image anyone has ever so dominated NVSL before.

Insufficient numbers of available swim lanes is a problem in D.C. for the adult swimming crowd, too. There’s a burgeoning number of triathletes and masters swimmers that train at D.C. facilities, and often we find ourselves crowded 5, 6 or more to a lane. As a District resident, I appreciate the free entrance to D.C. public pools but have set my expectations relatively low for the facilities, since you pay for what you get. Lap swim hours at Turkey Thicket are often cancelled without warning, to make way for open swim or other pool-related activities. I’ve noticed that fees for non-residents are not being collected at Rumsey or Hains – a missed opportunity for revenue that could allow for more lifeguards, better facilities maintenance and management.

The several year-round indoor pools in DCPS high schools and at UDC could have been available for years. But, they are, of course, controlled by DC, and have therefor been closed or unavailable for use. The decline of swimming and even competitive swimming dominance among DC youth over the last 30 years tracks and is attributable to this failure to maintain and encourage public access to public resources expensively purchased. Let us see how many swimmers get to use the long-delayed pool near the Tenley Metro station, scheduled to open in the next year.

City of Alexandria had plans to build a new pool along side its current indoor pool at Chinquapin Park Recreation Center. It was supposed to be a part of the rennovation of T.C. Williams High School. T.C. is done, where are the rennovations of Chinquapin?
