The PVS Senior LC Championships began its first morning session today with the qualifying heats for Friday evening's finals. Hundreds of swimmers competed, and some races had as many as 19 heats.

The best of PVS was on display in the two 200-meter freestyles. The girls swam first, with 133 swimmers competing for eight spots in Friday's final. The boys had an even smaller chance of making the final, with 147 swimmers competing for the eight lanes in the final.

Kristen Moores, 20, of Curl-Burke, finished with the top time in the qualifying round of the 200 free, winning her heat in 2:05.61. Coast Guard's Hannah Davis, also 20, finished second in 2:06.12, shaving almost two seconds off her seed time. Amanda Kendall, 20, of Makos, finished third, with a time of 2:06.78, while Curl-Burke's Leslie Swinley, 21, finished fourth, in 2:07.09. Swinley won Thursday's 1500-meter freestyle. In fifth, Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club's Meredith Budner, 20, won the final heat of the girls' qualifying with a time of 2:07.11.

“I definitely thought I was going to go faster,” Budner said. “I need a better warm-up. I need to work on pulling and kicking separately.”

Rounding out the top eight were Ann Fittin, 20, from New Jersey, who finished in 2:07.79, Valerie McMullan, 17, from Snow Swimming, who finished in 2:08.18, and University of Maryland's Laura Wright, 21, who finished with a time of 2:08.29.

In the boys' heats, Tom Koucheravy, 24, of the Mason Swim Team finished first in the qualifying rounds, with a time of 1:54.93. Maryland's Chris Rouchard, 21, finished second, in 1:55.62, a personal best for the Terrapin. He won the final heat of the boys' qualifying round.

“There's a comfort level of being here,” Rouchard said. “This is the pool and the way we train all season so it's really nice to be here.”

Tim Lane, 26, of Villanova, finished third, with a time of 1:56.25, and Snow's Matthew Haupt, 29, finished just behind him with a time of 1:56.41. RMSC's Brady Fox, 18, finished in 1:56.61, for fifth place, and Fish's Michael Flach, 18, Thursday's winner of the 800 free, finished in 1:57.00. In seventh was Curl-Burke's Bradley Phillips, 17, who finished in 1:57.22, and the last qualifier was Makos' swimmer Sean Fletcher, 17, who finished in 1:57.37, almost two seconds ahead of his seed time.
