When I learned flip turns in HS, I thought there was only one kind. Much later I found that what you are doing, and most people do is the "somersault" flip turn, where you push off on your side and rotate a half turn during the glide. What my coach called the "true" flip is when you push off the wall on your back and either rotate fully during the glide, or stay on your back for backstroke.

That coach claimed that the flip gets you off the wall faster because somersaulters tend to adjust their feet on the wall while twisting to the side. But I think that full rotation underwater requires a lot more breath control than the novice swimmer can manage lap after lap.
