Season Begins with PVS October Open, RMSC Kickoff Classic

By Paul Tenorio

The Potomac Valley Swimming season opened this weekend with the October Open, a large meet that serves as the first major event of the year for many swimmers in the area.

The open was held at two different pools, with the meet broken into three “sites.” Each site hosted 84 events and hundreds of swimmers took part in the meet, which was held at the Mount Vernon Rec Center in Alexandria and Fairlands Aquatic Center in Laurel.

Swimmers could participate in up to 11 events on the weekend, and there were several multi-event winners over the three sites. Swimmers varied in age, with one Fairlands site hosting entries from age nine to 29.

The weekend also played host to the Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club Kickoff Classic, a 78-event meet held from Oct. 16-18 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Swim Center in Silver Spring.

Many swimmers use the first events of the season to begin the process of preparing for tapered meets later in the season, with the Tom Dolan Invitational in December and high school championship meets later this winter among some of the key events.

Potomac Valley Swimming will host another open from November 6-8 at three different pools – Takoma, Cub Run and Lee District. Rockville-Montgomery will host a November Invitational from Nov. 14-15 at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Swim Center.

Actually, the first meet was on 4Oct hosted by Maryland Suburban Swim Club at Fairlands, as it turns out the same place as your site for the October Open. On the following weekend (10-11Oct) there were six meets in the LSC hosted by various PVS clubs. Through the end of the Short Course season (March 2010), there will be swim meets on the majority of the weekends of a month. With some weekends having 3 to 4 meets going on at the same time. This has been the PVS meet schedule for several years.
