For the second consecutive year it was the Oakton boys who took home the Virginia AAA Northern Region title, finishing ahead of Fairfax (215), Langley (198) and Robinson (193) with 244 points.

It was a surprising finish for Robinson, which has won seven consecutive state titles, but indicated the increased competition throughout the region and especially in the Liberty District.

Langley’s relay of Stephen Richards, Chuck Katis, Ryan Natal and Chris Pivikw opened the meet by setting a region record in the 200 yard medley relay with an automatic All-American time of 1:34.81, topping Oakton’s automatic All-American 1:35.28 and third-place Westfield‘s All-American consideration time of 1:37.86.

Oakton’s Bradley Phillips took the 200 freestyle title with an automatic All-American time of 1:40.24, falling just shy of the record he sent last year. McLean‘s Charlie Putnam (1:42.08), Washington-Lee‘s Freddy Crawford (1:42.11) and Herndon‘s Danny Camozzo (1:42.78) all followed with All-American consideration times.

It was the first of two individual titles for Phillips, who also won the 500 freestyle with an automatic All-American time of 4:29.40, ahead of the All-American consideration marks turned in by Madison‘s Adam Pennington (4:36.94) and Camozzo (4:38.18).

Katis won the 200 IM with an automatic All-American time of 1:51.68, ahead of Oakton’s K.J. Park, who also turned in an automatic All-American time of 1:52.24. Langley senior Richards finished third with an automatic All-American time of 1:53.68.

The Langley junior won a second title in the 100 breaststroke with an automatic All-American time of 57.07, ahead of Park’s automatic All-American 57.28 and three All-American consideration times turned in by Robinson’s Ricky Munch (58.51), Richards (58.98) and Westfield’s CJ Fiala (59.35)

Fairfax senior Joey Kelly took the title in the 50 freestyle with an All-American consideration time of 21.18, ahead of Woodson senior Kevin Vest (AAC – 21.34). Kelly doubled up his night with a win in the 100 freestyle, taking the title with a time of 47.01, just ahead of W-L’s Crawford (47.41) and Vest (48.04).

South Lakes senior Brad Dillon took the title in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.77, out touching Langley sophomore Natal (51.79) by two-hundredths of a second. Westfield junior Kurtis Ratcliff took third at 52.11, followed by Oakton freshman Philip Hu (52.40).

Fairfax’s 200 freestyle relay of Austin Patteson, Travis Lauri, Jake Baumgardner and Kelly won the title with an All-American consideration time of 1:27.48, followed by Jefferson (AAC – 1:27.87) and Woodson (AAC – 1:28.01).

Oakton’s Hu won the 100 backstroke title with an automatic All-American time of 50.94, out-touching the automatic All-American times of Putnam (51.11) and Dillon (51.33)

The meet closed with the champion Cougars 400 freestyle relay of Hu, Park, Chris Megaw and Phillips taking the title with an automatic All-American time of 3:09.69, ahead of Langley (3:12.03) and Fairfax (3:12.71).

Let’s not forget Woodson’s being right behind Langley and Robinson, Kevin Vest’s 2nd and 3rd place finishes, and 2 relays with AAC times.

  2. RSD says:

Paul you’re killin me. My Girls Win by 75 and don’t a shout out? Come on now. Anyways, props to Langley and Oakton for a good meet. Good luck to all at states. Here’s to the Northern Region dominating.

  3. RSD says:

    “don’t get a shout out?”

  4. Swimfan says:

Unfortunately, the weather and the uncertainty it created for the swim schedule deprived many swimmers of the normal excitement accompanying these meets. In fact, this site did cover the girls regional meet . . at the time, they still contemplated the possibility of finals. Give him a break!

  5. RSD says:

Paul’s my buddy, there’s no hard feelings. This site didn’t exist until recently so we’re grateful for any coverage.

  6. swim parent of 4 says:

I don’t think what “RSD says” said was so provocative nor do I think he was busting Paul’s chops – just more of an observation. This story “Oakton boys’ take Northern Region title” actually mentions who won the Northern Region meet and who came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place…For the second consecutive year it was the Oakton boys who took home the Virginia AAA Northern Region title, finishing ahead of Fairfax (215), Langley (198) and Robinson (193) with 244 points.

The story “Northern Region girls get swims in before storm” gives a lot of detail but nevery actually mentions which girls team “took the Northern Region title” or who took 2nd, 3rd or 4th place.

    Who did take 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th??? Anyone???

  7. another coach says:

RSD are you kidding? “Your girls” ?? How about admitting you simply lined up studs that train at SDS, CUBU and Machine and they won the meet? That “your” coaching of these swimmers consists of writing their names on the entry form? How many of “your” girls that scored at regions did more than the minimum one required practice a week at Robinson? How many of them actually train with you every day of the week? You’re simply another Robinson coach riding the coat tails of the year round work done by club coaches with these swimmers. They happen to live in the Robinson school district and you happened to get hired to be the coach. How about recognizing the efforts of Peter McDonough, Pete Morgan, Dan Jacobs, Christian Dowd and others? Their work is what enables you to talk so LOUDLY about your girls!!

  8. swimfan says:

Easy enough to look up . . . Girls order of finish was Robinson, Langley, Oakton and South County. Again, the only reason it wasn’t announced in the original article was because at the time the article was posted the results were being treated as prelims with the hope of later swimming finals, so the scores were not announced or being treated as finals. Weather later changed that. So it’s not Tenorio’s fault that RSD didn’t get the headline he wants. Hey, there’s still one more meet to go.

  9. swimfantoo says:

Don’t forget…..John Flanagan, Bill Marlin and of course many more….

  10. divefantoo says:

The girls team scores were not announced because the girls diving had not yet been completed, and it is a scoring event. The divers were unable to get their event completed until Monday night.

  11. RSD says:

You’re right swimfantoo I am lucky to have good kids who have great coaches, some of which I’m good friends with. And that’s why I wanted them to get recognition. As well as Langley and Oakton who deserved it too
