Whitman girls, Georgetown Prep win Metros championships

Severna Park sweeps Md. 4A/3A state meet

Q&A: Bill Bullough on Metros History

On Saturday, the 46th annual Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center in Boyds. The meet, better know as Metros, is one of the top championships in the region, hosting several of the area’s top high school programs from both the public and private school sectors. Bill Bullough, who started the Richard Montgomery Swim Club in 1968 and helped to organize the first Metros Championship, took some time to reflect on the meet, its history and some of his favorite memories.

Va. Beach pool is retooled ahead of states

The swimmers who will compete Saturday in the Virginia AAA state championship were not yet in middle school the last time the season-ending meet was held at the Princess Anne Recreation Center in Virginia Beach. But the story of that pool — which sparked controversy when it was found to be less than a half-inch short of 25 meters at the 2003 championships, thus nullifying several national records — is well known by many of the athletes.The pool has since undergone construction to meet competition standards. Yet while the lanes this year are a full 25 meters, there’s another type of measurement that will affect the athletes from Northern Virginia.

Little Hoyas Crowned at WMPSSDL’s

The Washington Metropolitan Prep School Swim and Dive League boys’ swimming championship was held Wednesday evening at Georgetown Prep after the snow delayed the meet several times. In a back-and-forth affair, Georgetown Prep distanced itself late from rival Gonzaga to claim the win with 437 points, ahead of the Eagles 399.5 and DeMatha’s 376. FULL RESULTS ATTACHED!

The 24th annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet

The 24th annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet was held this weekend at the Tacoma Community Center in Washington D.C., hosting more than 350 athletes from around the country. Founded in 1987 by the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation and The United Black Fund, Inc., in honor of Black History Month, the meet has been called the “premier minority swim competition in the United States and in the world,” by USA Swimming, according to the meet’s website.

UPDATE FROM FRIDAY EVENING: WMPSSDLs rescheduled for timed finals next week. The Northern Region meet has officially been moved to Monday. The Dulles District Meet has officially been canceled. Read on for the list of the swimmers that will be permitted to move forward to Regionals (currently scheduled for Monday starting at 9am). Falcons win, Seton’s Hill shines at Nat’l Catholics

Good Counsel’s girls take home a National Catholic title, while Seton School’s Jameson Hill and Holy Cross’s Katie Rogers win Most Valuable Swimmer over the weekend. Hill turned in two automatic All-American times and snapped a record set by Olympian Bobby Hackett that has stood since 1977.

Yorktown sweeps National District

Washington-Lee’s boys’ fell just eight points short against a Patriots team that swept the titles at Washington-Lee pool, with the girls’ team turning in a dominant performance by scoring 606 points, 357 more than second-place Falls Church.
