Upsets were the norm in the Prince William Swim League this weekend as four lower division teams defeated their higher-division foes.
Brookside (Black) won 2,602.5-2,329.5 over Meadowbrook Woods (Green) for its second dual meet triumph of the summer. Katie Heenan, 12, led the girls with wins in the 12-and-under 50 free (34.65), 50 fly (40.06), 50 back (39.09), and as part of the the 100 medley relay (1:15.16) and 100 free relay (1:05.22) teams. Meanwhile, Mike Hudgins led the boys with victories in the 18-and-under 50 free (27.47), 50 fly (29.81), 50 back (29.64) and as part of the 200 free relay (1:58.69) team.
Green Division’s Piedmont toppled the White Division’s Wellington, 2650-2443, thanks largely to the efforts of its girls who outscored their Wellington counterparts 1,352.5-1,182.5.
Sofia Revilak, 13, led the charge with her undefeated swims in the 14-and-under age group. She claimed victories in the 50 free (28.85), 50 fly (33.28), 100 I.M. (1:14.83) and was a part of winning teams in the 200 free relay (2:07.78) and 200 medley relay (2:32.87).
Ashland (White) took down Lake Ridge (Red), 2659.5-2570.5, to remain undefeated in dual meets with an all around effort as five different swimmers — Allyson Bodmer, Thomas Diaz, Ryan Huges, Siobhan Murphy and Tommy Rabago — won three individual events.
Lastly, Yellow Divison’s Dominion Valley bested Bridlewood (White) 2,663-2,585. Morgan Mugnolo finished a strong swim for the Sharks with top times in the 12-and-under 50 fly (34.86), 50 back (35.93), 100 I.M. (1:19.56) and also the 100 free relay (1:01.19) and 100 medley relay (1:12.28).
There weren’t many close meets in the PWSL, but in the Prince Mont Swim League’s Division A, the MVP Dolphins, defeated Belair Bath, 291-288.
Belair’s girls mixed ages 200 free relay squad of Sydney Windsor, Taniya Evans, Rachel Williams and Emily Morse won the final event of the day, finishing in 2:09.47 but it wasn’t quite enough to overcome MVP’s advantage after the Dolphins’ boys mixed-ages relay — Michael Kelley, Matthew Michael, Rory Lewis and Ben Otoo — captured their race in 2:00.62.
In the Montgomery County Swim League, a Division N meet was the closest of the weekend, with West Hillandale defeating Kemp Mill by only five points, 388-383, after a pair of clutch relay victories in the final two events.
Both the boys and girls 14-and-under 175 free relays edged their Kemp Mill opponents with Luka Yetter, Mickey Daniel, Justin Hedlund and Marcus Davis clinching in 2:10.81 followed by girls Delaney Harrison-Peters, Taylor Rodriguez, Jenna Harrison-Peters and Joelle Ocheltree winning in 2:25.70 to seal a dual meet victory.
Carderock Springs defeated Somerset, 402-382, as Charlotte Meyer led the way, winning four individual events: the 100 free (1:01.57), 50 fly (32.29), 100 back (1:08.68) and 100 I.M. (1:10.16) and helped the 200 mixed ages medley relay to another first place showing (2:25.60). She set new pool and team records in the backstroke and I.M.
Meyer’s wins this weekend give her 12 individual victories through the first three weeks of the summer season and it also sets up a showdown with Eldwick’s Shannon Ridge. Both Division J 18-and-under swimmers, who are teammates for the Rockville Montgomery Swim Club, are undefeated in individual events and relays but will oppose each other in all of their regular contests on July 10.
New records
The area’s two largest swim leagues each saw a record fall this weekend. In MCSL, Upper County’s Emily Wang set a new record for the 9-10 25 backstroke with her time of 16.29, besting the former record set in 2000 by Damascus’ Morgan Ribar of 16.35. Upper County handed Flower Valley its third loss this season, 455-336.
In the NVSL, 8-year-old Max Cruz, who swims for Holmes Run Acres, set a new mark in the 25-yard fly (16.70). The mark broke a 20-year record of 17.42 set by Ryan Scott of Walden Glen in 1990.
