As everyone begins to head back to school, we at Reach for the Wall wanted to thank all our readers for a second successful summer season. Spread the word that we’ll be covering high school swimming as we did last winter and could use as many results as you can send us (see below for details).

In the meantime, we wanted to specifically thank the league data gurus who, every week, supplied us with your leagues’ results: Bob Hincke, Eric Lalande, Tim Husson and Tom Howe. Without them, we’d have no top times or swimmer pages.

We wanted to acknowledge those who developed their team pages. This season, you all took it to another level and we’ve highlighted the best of them on the reachforthewall.com homepage (left-hand rail). We also wanted to thank everyone who sent us story ideas. Please keep them coming. While we’ll be mostly quiet until October or November, we’d love to be able to follow up on any ideas you might have. As always, you can send them to info@reachforthewall.com. During our quiet time, we’d love it if you continued to bring any and all of your swimming conversations to our forums page.  Take a look and try it out.

We’ll see you all soon!

Here are the data instructions for high school swimming season:

To file via MEET MANAGER

PMSL Hy-Tek Meet ManagerSTEP 1: Once you’ve entered your meet into meet manager, export your results and save them as a .zip file containing the .cl2 and .hy3 file. When exporting meet results to team manager leave the team area blank and it will select all teams swum in the meet.

STEP 2: If possible, each file should contain the information for the all the teams that participated in meet. If you have only your own team’s results available, that’s fine, please send them to us we’d love to have them. But if you have them all, it would be great to have them sent to us all in one file. You are all likely 1,000 times more familiar with the meet manager software than we are, but here’s a screengrab our tech folks asked us pass along to all of those sending us results (note that the top three fields are left blank). This is the screen that appears just before you export.

STEP 3: Please send an e-mail with your zip file attached and subject line of “Swim meet from TEAM A vs. TEAM B vs. TEAM C: mm/dd/yy” to hss@washpost.com.

To file via TEAM MANAGER (many thanks to Jeff Wolla and Brian Pawlowicz for helping us figure out this process. This is adapted from an e-mail Jeff sent us late last week)

STEP 1 All times, places, and points for each event were entered into Team Manager 5 using the Results by Event selection under the Results menu for the designated meet. This involves some scrolling up and down the displayed roster since entries are not defined in advance. Results are printed to double check swimmers, times, and scores against the hand-scored sheets.

STEP 2 Go back to the main screen.

STEP 3 Use the File>Export>Meet Results selection. Make sure the correct meet is displayed in the Specific Meet box. Check Export Relays. In the Athlete Export Filters box make sure All is selected. Your Team should be in the Team box, but I guess this does not really matter since results for only one team are entered for the meet.

STEP 4 Click OK and a box will popup telling you how Individual and Relay results were exported. It will also tell you the name of the file and the location where you will find it. Click OK.

STEP 5 Click Close. (If you click OK, the results are exported again and the number at the end of the file name increases by one.)

STEP 6 Close or minimize TM and find the zipped export file. After changing the file name to match the meet, this is the file that should be emailed with a subject line of “Swim meet from TEAM A vs. TEAM B vs. TEAM C: mm/dd/yy” to hss@washpost.com.

Those wishing to check what is inside the zipped file can go to the Reports>Export/Import File Report (CL2, HY3, SD3) menu selection. Select your export file in the next window and click Open. Click OK in the next box. Select one of the files in the next box (CFILE 01 or HFILE01) and click Open. Click OK in the next box and a report will be generated that shows what is in the file.

CONCLUSION

Send all results from your season to  info@reachforthewall.com.

  1. WJSD says:

Could we please get some coverage of the Junior Pan Pacs, where Kaitlin Pawlowicz is currently competing? I know that there’s a lot of complaining about CUBU coverage, and coverage of Kaitlin and Janet, but being a member of RMSC, I would still very much like to see some results at least, if possible? Thanks!!

  2. equal says:

What kind of coverage do you mean? You can go to USA swimming if you want to see the Jr Panpac coverage which is much more thorough then what you would get from a local source with no reporter covering is personally. She came in 3rd in the 200 fly last night and is seeded 14th out of 20 in the 4im today.

If you want to know more about the CUBU swimmers including Kaitlin, you can read the half dozen articles in the RTW archives about her..Dont think there is anything new to report, she is a very good age group swimmer … that and what has been written (extensively) pretty much covers it

  3. swimfantoo says:

Don’t understand why anyone complains about RMSC, and CUBU coverage. They have swimmers that are sucessfull in pool. It is disappointing that people complain about the coverage the Post provides related to the sport of swimming. I’m surprised they still want to write about swimming with all the negative comments about content.
There are not many areas around the country that has a vehicle to promote the sport and write about their swimmers. Equal – Pawlowicz has a world ranking in the 200 fly.

  4. equal says:

I guess I don’t understand why their is a need by some(coaches, parents, stalkers?) to see this swimmer or a couple others focused on et al. I mean their have already been numerous articles focusing on her (and a few others swimmers) , what else do you need to know about them.?.Kinda strange actually

As far as a world ranking, that’s great but their have been others (Fox, Christensen,Baumgardner, Friedland to name a few ) that have had top 100 world rankings as 16/17 year olds and had or are having successful college careers..
I guess I have just not seen anyone that has tried so hard to get recognition constantly for any of them. Its almost emabaressing.

I don’t see anyone posting a request for more info about Rachel Naureth, hands down the best prep swimmer in the state IMO.
Over and over its the same name….

  5. Emily says:

For starters, Rachel Naurath swam for NOVA, which isn’t a PVS team. RFTW tends to cover the Washington-Metropolitan Area, and therefore, writes the majority of its articles on Potomac Valley Swimming. I guess not that many people want to hear about people that are already in college (Fox, Friedland, to name a few), but rather, up-and-coming swimmers such as Conger, Pawlowicz, and Hu, because they are currently swimming in the Metro area, as opposed to a school.

  6. mom with two swimmers says:

You are absolutely right, Emily. Thanks.

  7. swim coach says:

6000 swimmers in PVS, 35 teams, ………… same 2 teams, same 6 swimmers, article after article

  8. swimfan says:

Emily says: “I guess not that many people want to hear about people that are already in college (Fox, Friedland, to name a few), but rather, up-and-coming swimmers such as Conger, Pawlowicz, and Hu”

Really? Can I see the results of your scientific poll? I would like to hear about other swimmers..And RTW has mentioned other swimmers from other LSC’s(Lee, Pelton)

  9. WJSD says:

swimfan-They’ve mentioned the other swimmers in passing, they don’t spend entire articles on them. This website is mainly focused on PVS, as that’s the area that the Post generally covers. And while Friedland, Fox, Baumgardener, and Cristensen may have had world rankings, they were to early for RFTW. It came around after they left for college, and RFTW doesn’t cover college swimmers except when Nationals, etc rolls around. And what are you talking about “scientific poll?” What is that even supposed to mean?

  10. JoeDude says:

Great job Reachforthewall staff! Without you, we would have no information about area swimming other than summer swim league and PVS websites. You are doing great! Wishing you great success as you continue to evolve with your website and coverage vision!

    Thank you!

  11. JoeDude says:

For those wanting further coverage of major swim events go to swimnetwork.com those folks are great and you can watch video on demand for meets from 6 months to a year ago. prett cool!

  12. Sprint guy says:

I can’t wait for the high school season and all the comments by the nut job parents who know nothing about swimming other than how their children finished at Metros.

  13. SW1M says:

why not do an article on the swimmers from PVS who made Olympic Trial cuts? Unless, of course, people like Equal would complain about how the article would cite the “usuals” that apparently “everyone” is sick of…Hu, Conger, Haase, Pawlowicz, etc.

  14. damian says:

There are actually too many good swimmers in this MDV area to give proper space to those who should be acknowledged. Admittedly, some get morew exposure simply because they are always swimming somewhere. The ones who should be spotlighted need to be better all around. Not just swimming but in every aspect of their lives. ie: school, community, non-swimming athletics, volunteer time. Keeping that in mind, Kaitlin deserves the spot right now. In near future, you will, and rightly should, see Jack Conger, Sarah Haase, Serge Gould, and many others frrom this area get acknowledgements for their successful performances. Parents should remember that it is about the swimmer first and foremost. The cream rises to the top. The fat gets separted out.

  15. swimfan says:

Please tell me you didnt say, “The cream rises to the top..The fat gets separated out” when you were referring to young athletes that work their butts off in practice..

Tell you what, let me know how the “cream” is doing in 2 and a half years when it counts..or when they are at NCAA’s..Some of the best young swimmers in the area would not have been considered “cream” by your class of parents (or lack there of)…and the cream went on to curdle while the fat scored at NCAA’s and had a successful career…

I would bet the ranch that you are a parent of one of the above mentioned swimmers that just needs to get their kids name back out there..

  16. equal says:

PVS Outstanding Athlete Awards..a few of the smaller teams (Mach, HACC, SNOW, FISH) got some swimmers recognized as well as “the BIG TWO”..Must say I was surprised to see Conger share the award, he has an OT cut..:

Sinead Eksteen (CUBU) 9 Timmy Ellett (RMSC)
Isabella Rongione (FISH) 10 Michael Kelley (CUBU)
Emily Meilus (FISH) 11 Christian Ginieczki (HACC)
    Devin Truong (RMSC)
Katie Ledecky (CUBU) 12 Chris Murphy (FISH))
    none 13 Harrison Gu (RMSC)
Janet Hu (CUBU) 14 Patrick Scordato (RMSC)
Hellen Moffitt (CUBU) 15 Philip Hu (CUBU)
    Jack Conger (RMSC)
Elizabeth Pepper (RMSC) 16 Jonathan Ekstrom (RMSC)
Kaitlin Pawlowicz (CUBU) 17 Charlie Putnam (MACH)
Danielle Schulkin (RMSC) 18 KJ Park (CUBU)
Ellyn Baumgarnder (CUBU) OPEN Matt McLean (SNOW)

  17. unknowswimmer1 says:

    swimfan,

No one but people in this country give a hoot about NCAA’s. The entire planet measures things in meters, and the real big time swimmers will excel in yards and in LC meters, which is where it counts every 4 years. While NCAA’s is a tougn meet, that is the true measure of the psychotic parent, they mean nothing in the international community.

As far as the outstanding athletes go, there are several obvious miscues in there. Sarah Haase, who qualified for the National youth team, should have won over Helen Moffit. Phillip Hu could not have held a candle to Jack Conger this year. Matt McLean was swimming at FAST in California all summer, what bone head entered him under the SNOW club?

  18. AnotherCoach says:

Wow, was just reviewing most comments here and can say what a bunch of pettyness. Some of you need to step back and get yourself in check, because it’s not about “you”. As a coach to multiple record holders, I learned that early on in my leadership life. That’s when truly spectacular results began flying in. I wish all swimmers the best, and remember, as long as you are doing what you love and give 100% effort, then you have achieved more than any newsprint recognition or award can.

  19. swim coach says:

The bonehead who entered him as SNOW is probably the bone head who paid for him to be registered with SNOW for 2010. McLean represented SNOW at Nationals thus qualifying him for the award, bone head

  20. swimfan says:

unknowswimmer1 says:”No one but people in this country give a hoot about NCAA’s”

Haha..except any swimmer that wants to come to this country and receive an education while having a great experience ..

Im not sure why you are even talking about international swimming on this thread when I would have to guess 99% of the parents think swimming in college is a great goal..So what if the rest of the world cares more about long course, thats not what counts here unless you are in the top 32 world ranking (usa swimming considers top 32 world ranking elite”) and I think the only swimmer that met that left to train in CA. Dont turn your knows up at scy unless you are in that group and even if you are, and there are plenty of swimmers that are, college swimming provides great opportunities and swimmers like vanderkay and ,biesel never put down one over the other

  21. SwimDad says:

Any Sport + Parents = Disaster

  22. B. Smith says:

    From AnotherCoach:

“Wow, was just reviewing most comments here and can say what a bunch of pettyness. Some of you need to step back and get yourself in check, because it’s not about ‘you’.”

If you are just realizing this now, this must have been your first visit to the board. Check back in two months and you won’t believe what you read.

  23. swimmmurr says:

Thanks reach for the wall :)

PS. NCAAs is the fastest meet in the world because any college that wants to win recruits from abroad…..
PPS. I 100000000000000% agree with anothercoach.

Can’t wait till winter swim season!

  24. learning to fly says:

so is this place officially dead?

  25. jerter says:

did you not actually read the article you’re commenting on?

  26. Mitch Rubin says:

No, learning to fly, we’re not dead. We’ll be back to cover the high school swimming season. We’re currently entering in high school swimming schedules and we hope to have as many results sent to us as possible so that we can keep an accurate list of the area’s best times. Every high school with a swimming program in the D.C. Metro area already has a school page set up for anyone to contribute articles, photos and videos to and we’ll have two reporters writing a total of three posts per week during the season (not counting holiday break) beginning in early-to- mid December.
