Coach’s Corner: Training tips for the holiday break

Any chance you can do any aerobic training it will help. This would include walking (60 minutes), running (30 minutes) or biking (30 minutes) each day.

If you are staying in a hotel, you should have access to their workout equipment. Stationary biking (30 minutes), an elliptical machine (30 minutes), or a treadmill (30 minutes) are great options. Those times should be about 3-4 miles in distance.

If you have access to a short pool, use that opportunity to work on stroke technique, push offs, streamlines and open turns. You won’t really have any room to work on any sort of yardage.

The best advice is to see if there is any US club in that area and call them. They are all very accommodating and will allow you to train with them.”

Hi, i have a question for coach’s corner – Im curious how club coaches coordinate/schedule/time the tapering for HS swimmers for their March Championship meets (sectionals, jr Nationals) with the earlier HS championship meets like WMPSSDLs and METRO’s. Thanks

  2. SwimMom says:

Aquaholic – many club coaches don’t care about the high school season. They are training for US meets. In the past, many of the MD coaches would taper their athletes for Metros because it could fit between the December taper meet (Dolan/Sports fair/Nationals) and the March meet. They won’t worry about meets that are not observed – so none of the dual meets count. What happens this year is up to the individual coaches – I have heard several say that high school swimming is not a part of their training plan anymore and they will not taper for WMPSSDLs or Metros – time will tell what will happen. . . .

Isn’t fitting that SwimMom is going to answer a question directed to swim coaches…. why doesn’t she worry about Christmas or “holiday” cookies and let coaches answer the questions?

  4. Sprint guy says:

That’s harsh, Swim Coach. She’s just acting like a typical swim parent.

  5. Club and High School Swimmer says:
