Reachforthewall says goodbye and thank you

To the Reachforthewall community,

We are very sad to announce that Reachforthewall.com will be shutting down effective immediately.

When we launched this website in June of 2009, we had the ambitious goal of providing comprehensive reporting on the D.C. area’s swimming scene. During that time, you welcomed us into your practices and onto your pool decks, and you made us feel like a part of your community. Reachforthewall became a source for all things D.C. swimming and witnessed greatness at every level in the nation’s talent pool. We are grateful to those who made it so and regret that it must come to an end.

Before we go, we’d like to thank a number of people who, without their help, this site would not have gotten off the ground.

First, we’d like to thank the many data coordinators who provided us with results. Without their timely reporting and dedication to their leagues, the site would not have gotten very far. Specifically, we thank those in the Montgomery County Swim League for enthusiastically buying in right from when we launched in 2009, and to the other leagues — NVSL, PMSL, PWSL, CSL, DCCL, ODSL and CCSDA — for quickly following suit.

We’d also like to thank the athletes and coaches who put so many hours in the pool; you provided a seemingly endless supply of inspiration for those who wrote for this site. Our deepest thanks for your time, your insight and above all your dedication to the sport.

We’d also like to thank the many writers. Your perspectives helped create a richer experience for all those who came here to read.

Finally, to you, our loyal readers. Without you there would be no community. We will miss you most of all. Keep swimming, keep reaching.

Best regards,

Bryan and Mitch

  1. OMG! You have been the go to site for everything swimming in the D.C. area……not sure where we will get this kind of info and insight now. RFTW was the only place that tied everything together from the local summer leagues all the way up to the national level. Sad day in D.C. area swimming.

  2. Sad to see RFTW go. You authored many great swim articles about our local swimmers. I hope you do it again soon. Thank you for all you did. Best of luck !!

  3. So sad. There goes a resource that provided some valuable information to the sport of swimming. First many colleges lose funding to their swim teams now this! What next? For a sport that works EVERY muscle in your body it sure isn’t appreciated. What can the community do to keep RFTW going? Or is it just that time to let it go?

  4. Thank you so much for all your work. We will miss you! I will definitely NOT read Washington Post Sports page focusing on moneymaking sports.

  5. WaPo, cutting costs yet again.

Can’t wait for the Associated Press coverage of NCAAs, Olympic Trials and the Rio Olympic swimming in 2016!

  6. First WaPo finishes off the Gazette in Montgomery and PG Counties and now it axes RFTW! Where are athletes and their families supposed to turn now for local swimming coverage? I’m not resubscribing to WaPo because of this.

Thanks for all your hard work Bryan and Mitch. You will definitely be missed.

  7. Hoo-oo ha-a ha-a hoo-oo
    Precious moments
When will I see you again
When will we share precious moments
Will I have to wait forever
    Will I have to suffer
And cry the whole night trough?
When will I see you again
When will our hearts beat together?
Are we in love or just friends?
    Is this my beginning
    Or is this the end?
When will I see you again?

  8. This is heartbreaking news. Like MDSwimMom, I will never read the Washington Post again.

  9. So I’d like to know where you got the notion?
So I’d like to know where you got the notion?
Rock the boat, rock the boat
Rock the boat, rock the boat

Ever since our voyage of love began
Your touch has thrilled me like the rush of the wind
And your arms have get me safe from the rolling sea
There’s always been a quiet place to harbor you and me

Your love is like a ship on the ocean
We’ve been sailing with a cargo filled with love and devotion

So I’d like to know where you got the notion?
So I’d like to know where you got the notion?
Rock the boat, rock the boat
Rock the boat, rock the boat

Up till now we sailed through every storm

Don’t let this trip you have flow away from me
Don’t let me drift away, my dear, when love can set me free

Your love is like a ship on the ocean
We’ve been sailing with a cargo filled with love and devotion
