Montgomery County teams shined at this year’s Maryland 4A/3A Swimming Championship, dominating the team competition. 16 state records were broken by MCPS swimmers, as Walter Johnson’s boys and Whitman’s girls claimed their school’s first state titles.

Gonzaga enters this week’s championship meets as one of the hottest teams in the area, coming off wins at the National Catholic and WMPSSDL championship meets. They will be tested this weekend at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championship. The Metros finals are Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center, where the best teams from Montgomery County, WMPSSDL, and DCIAA come together for one of the best collections of high school talent in on the East Coast.

Battlefield high school remained on top, repeating at AAA Cedar Run District champions. Patriot boys was second, in just its first year, and showed itself to be a contender for years to come. Freedom girls were second.

On a night where few races were won without achieving an All-American cut time, Oakton’s boys’ and girls’ teams outlasted the competition to once again stand tall as the AAA Northern Region champions. Oakton’s boys beat Woodson, 281.5 to 250, at Oakmarr RECenter, despite not winning a single event until the final relay of the night.

Walter Johnson won the MCPS Division I Championship after a close meet with Churchill’s boys. Churchill girls beat Wootton and Whitman after placing first, third, and fourth in diving to give the Bulldogs a lead going into the swimming events.

It was an exuberant atmosphere Friday night at Claude Moore RECenter for the 2012 Liberty District Championship meet. Swimmers from all teams were in high spirits and ready to race. In the end, Langley girls and Madison boys’ again claimed the district title, Madison for the third year in a row. Abi Speers and Cyrus Hashemi shined for their teams.

RFTW’s look at this weekend’s Va. AAA Patriot District Championship Swim & Dive Meet, taking place January 27-28 at Cub Run RECenter. Oakton is hoping to get back to championship form this season. Their girls are the defending district champions, while their boys were the runner ups after winning the district, region, and state the year before. Expect Chantilly and Westfield to make things difficult for the Cougars as they put their star studded line ups on the the blocks.

RFTW’s look at this weekend’s Va. AAA Liberty District Championship Swim & Dive Meet, taking place January 26-28 at Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale. Will Madison’s boys and Langley’s girls be able to repeat as district champions? Or will another team step up this year and steal the crown? Yorktown girls’ team (7-0) are again undefeated this season, having not lost a regular season or district championship meet in over a decade. On the boys’ side, an undefeated Washington-Lee boys’ team are the reigning champions and are not ready to relinquish their crown. Events begin each night at 5:30 p.m. at the brand-new Yorktown Pool in Arlington. Swimming preliminaries will be on Friday, Jan. 27, with finals the next night, Jan. 28.
