McLean topped Langley for their first Liberty District girls’ championship in 16 years. Madison boys team continued to roll for the fourth straight year.

The Va. AAA State Swimming & Diving Championship Meet kicks off on Friday, Feb. 17. Finals on Saturday. Who will take home the team title? What records could fall? Here are 5 storylines to follow at this year’s championship meet.
On a night where few races were won without achieving an All-American cut time, Oakton’s boys’ and girls’ teams outlasted the competition to once again stand tall as the AAA Northern Region champions. Oakton’s boys beat Woodson, 281.5 to 250, at Oakmarr RECenter, despite not winning a single event until the final relay of the night.
It was an exuberant atmosphere Friday night at Claude Moore RECenter for the 2012 Liberty District Championship meet. Swimmers from all teams were in high spirits and ready to race. In the end, Langley girls and Madison boys’ again claimed the district title, Madison for the third year in a row. Abi Speers and Cyrus Hashemi shined for their teams.
RFTW’s look at this weekend’s Va. AAA Liberty District Championship Swim & Dive Meet, taking place January 26-28 at Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale. Will Madison’s boys and Langley’s girls be able to repeat as district champions? Or will another team step up this year and steal the crown? It’s a toss up between the top teams, but we know freshmen swimmers will be the key this year in the Liberty District.
The high school season kicks back into gear this weekend with rivalry meets in northern Va. and heavyweight bouts in Montgomery County, featuring Madison-Langley, Robinson-Westfield, Walter Johnson-Wootton, and Churchill-B-CC. We’ll see who trained the hardest during the three week holiday break as we enter the 2012 half of the high school season.
Swimmers from area swim clubs will be competing this weekend at the 2011 Winter National Championships. Former SNOW swimmer and University of Virginia graduate, Matt McLean is looking to defend his first place finish in the 400 free and improve upon his second place finish in the 200 free at the 2011 National Championships last August.
The VHSL AAA swim and dive season comes to a dramatic close this weekend at the state championships in Virginia Beach. The Langley girls and the Westfield boys have to be considered the favorites, but will be tested.
After taking second place at the district, regional, and state meets last year, the Langley girls are back and stronger than ever. With district and regional titles already to their names this year, the girls hope to add a state title to that collection this weekend.
As Westfield senior CJ Fiala turned off on the last wall in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final boys’ event of the Virginia AAA Northern Region swim and dive championships, he found himself neck and neck with Robinson’s anchor. Madison divers won both the boys’ and girls’ 1M diving competition to open the 2011 Northern Region Swim and Dive Championships, but the region titles won’t be decided until the swimmers take the water on Saturday evening.
