Consistently placing in the top heats, Osbourn Park boys' and girls' swim teams ran away with the AAA Northwest Region Swimming Championship for the second straight year.

Click here for complete meet results

Osbourn Park boys’ and girls’ swim teams successfully defended their AAA Northwestern Region Championship titles on Friday at the Freedom Aquatics Center in Manassas. The Yellow Jacket girls scored 319 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Albermarle (256) and third-place Stafford (230.50). Osbourn Park’s boys compiled 334 points to finish more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Albemarle (238.50) and third-place Mountain View (202).

In the girls’ meet, Osbourn Park placed all three of its relays in the top three. The Yellow Jacket girls won the 200 free relay in 1:39.98 with the team of Christine Souther, Natalie Tabor, Courtney Mizerak and Ashley Clark. Osbourn Park was also second in the 400 free relay and third in the 200 medley relay.

Double-winner Emma Skelley was the high point winner for the Jackets, as she successfully defended her regional title in 500 free, finishing in 4:59.09. In the 200 free, Skelley trailed Gar-Field’s Kelly Henry until the final 50, but finished strong to take first, 1:53.43 to Henry’s 1:55.80.

Other double-winners were Albemarle’s Holly Harper, who defended her regional titles in the 100 free (53.13) and 100 back (57.85), and Bailie Monahan (Colonial Forge), who captured the 100 fly title for the second year in a row (56.36), and earned her second win in the 200 IM (2:06.44).

In the 50 free, the meet’s closest event, Battlefield’s Sofia Revilak edged out Woodbridge’s Taylor Vincent by just one-hundredth of a second, 24.60 to 24.61.

Ali Stephens-Pickeral (George Washington High School), seeded fourth in the 100 breaststroke, dropped more than four seconds, and posted an automatic All American time of 1:03.44, to win the event. Runner-up Kayla Brumbaum (Riverbend) finished in an All American consideration time of 1:04.38.

Battlefield’s 200 medley relay also posted an All American consideration time, with Nina Tremols, Natalie Martin, Holly Criscuolo, and Revilak combining for a 1:48.67.

In the 400 free relay, Albemarle’s team of Corie Morton, Hannah Harper, Abby Wuensch, and Holly Harper was first in 3:38.57.

Like their girls, Osbourn Park’s boys were the only team to place all three relay teams in the top three. The Yellow Jacket boys were first in the 400 free relay, as Greg Stoffa, Sam Stronko, Joe Worrick, and Peter Lord combined for the win in 3:14.95.

Osbourn Park showed its overwhelming strength by placing multiple swimmers in the top six all night.

Stoffa was the lone individual event winner for the Jackets, winning the 200 IM. Stoffa trailed Justin Barden (Orange County) nearly the entire race, but finished with a strong freestyle leg to take first, 1:57.74 to 1:57.90. Barden later took first in the 100 back with a time of 52.75.

Albemarle’s Matt Lockman was a double winner for the second year in a row, taking first in the 50 free (21.43) and 100 free (47.24).

Henry Campbell (Osbourn) waged a fierce battle in the 500 free with Stoffa. Campbell held off the Osbourn Park senior to take first in 4:34.81. Stoffa was second in 4:35.02. Stoffa’s teammates Stronko and Kenny Parker finished third and fourth.

In the 200 free Stronko set the early pace, but Campbell again came on strong in the end, finishing in 1:43.18 to Stronko’s 1:43.67.

Other winners were Jacob Leidy (Broad Run) in the 100 fly (53.00) and Andrew Williamson (Albemarle) in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.76).

Although coming in as the third seed for the 200 free relay, Broad Run’s team of Leidy, Michael Kopecky, Jack Morrisroe, and Alan Horbackknocked more than two seconds off their time to win first in 1:29.75.

Broad Run's Alan Horback reacts as he checks the scoreboard after the 200 free relay.
In the 200 medley relay, the second-seeded Mountain View’s team of Michael Sell, Dylan Phillippart, Michael Slattery, and Mike Johnson shaved nearly two seconds off their seed time to take first in 1:39.49.

Northwest Region teams will compete next week at the AAA Virginia Swimming and Diving Championship meet, held at the Jim McKay Natatorium, George Mason University-Fairfax, Feb. 17-18.

That list of undefeated teams got smaller over the weekend, as we put 2012's first week of high school swimming behind us.

The new year was off to an exciting start, with close races and close meets across the region. The championship picture is becoming more clear now that teams have several meets under their belts. However, the dual meet season is just practice for area teams; district and divisional championships are not decided by dual meet records, so even undefeated teams know they need to keep training hard.

Wootton girls roll; WJHS boys sneak by despite missing key swimmers

Wootton girls were dominant against the Wildcats on Saturday, but the boys team squandered and opportunity against a depleted Walter Johnson boys’ team. [read more here]

Churchill sweeps B-CC

Churchill looked like the paramount team we’ve come to expect, commanding the meet from start to finish. B-CC showed it has some talent, but it lacks the depth to compete for a divisional title against teams like Churchill and Whitman. [read more here]

Woodson remains undefeated; beats TC Williams

*provided by Woodson Swim & Dive

Despite the long layoff over winter break, Woodson was able to rattle off 34 season’s best times to win 224-91 (boys), 213-99 (girls) over TC Williams.

The Cavalier boys and girls swept diving (1,2,3,4) with Eric Pavord and Samantha Eldridge each taking first. More than half of the divers recording season high scores.

James Chung (Woodson) recorded his first individual region time of the season in the boys’ 200 IM in 2 minutes 3.77 seconds.

Gloriya Mavrova won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Titans.

Leah Rogers (Woodson) easily eclipsed the region qualifying time in girls’ 200 IM (2:13.55), cutting nearly 2 seconds from her personal best.

Titans’ captain, senior Abby Cox scored a regional cut in the 200 IM (2:13.04), winning the event.

One of the standout performances of the night came form Katie McGraw (Woodson), who crushed her personal best time, dropping five seconds, in the girls’ 200 freestyle, and chopped 15 seconds off her previous best in the 500 freestyle for second place, behind Cox, a two-time state qualifier in the event.

Lawrence Lincoln (TC Williams) tied for first in the 50 free style and anchored the winning boys’ 400 freestyle relay.

Despite the dominance by Woodson, the meet ended with excitement. The last event of the night, the girls’ 400 free relay, was decided by .01, with TC edging out the Cavs. The team of A. Cox, Charlotte Sackett, Colleen Cox, and Mavrova set a team new record.

Next week will match the Woodson boys and girls (5-0) against the West Springfield Spartans (5-0, 5-0) in a meet that may very well determine the regular season titles for both.

Patriot beats Broad Run

*provided by Broad Run Swimming

In a meet filled with tight finishes, Patriot High School defeated the Broad Run boys’ and girls’ swim teams in Saturday’s Cedar Run District meet. The Patriot boys won 163-123, while the girls won 166-120.
