On a night where few races were won without achieving an All-American cut time, Oakton‘s boys’ and girls’ teams outlasted the competition to once again stand tall as the AAA Northern Region champions. Oakton’s boys beat Woodson, 281.5 to 250, at Oakmarr RECenter, despite not winning a single event until the final relay of the night.

The girls’ side was more decisive, Oakton’s girls pulling away from a top-loaded West Potomac team to win 245 to 190. They were led by sophomore Janet Hu, who set two new regional records in the 100-yard freestyle (49.52 seconds) and 100 backstroke (53.76 seconds), both in Automatic All-American times, before delivering a come from behind victory in the girls’ 400 freestyle relay.

OAKTON, VA - FEBRUARY 4: Oakton's Janet Hu (top) leads Langley's Abi Speers in the girls 100-yard freestyle. Hu would set a record with a time of 49.52 in the race. (Photo by Preston Keres/For The Washington Post)

Where Hu was impressive, no one could outshine the duo of Seliskar brothers from Thomas Jefferson.

Freshman Andrew Seliskar finished with four All-American cuts – three Automatic – and a regional record.

A. Seliskar first AAA cut came in the boys’ 200 medley relay, where he and his brother, senior, Stephen Seliskar, delivered key legs to take first in a time of 1:35.10, along with Reese Frerichs and Miles Oakley. The brothers would achieve an All-American Consideration cut in the 200 freestyle relay, as well.

“I didn’t expect to swim like this,” said A. Seliskar. “It’s really great that I get to swim alongside my brother and the rest of the [Jefferson] team. We’re all pumped to go to states in a couple weeks and compete.”

Individually, A. Seliskar outpaced the field in the boys’ 200 individual medley, where he set a new regional record of 1:50.14, and the 100 butterfly (49.71), both in AAA cut time. Stephen ended the impressive night for the siblings with an AAA cut in the 100 backstroke, winning in 50.05. He had set the regional record in the event the night before at prelims in 49.97.

Also setting a new regional record was the West Potomac team of Reanna Dona, Maxine Clifford, Sara Bertram, and Hellen Moffitt in the girls’ 200 medley, with a time of 1:46.19, in an AAA cut. Oakton had the early lead thanks to Hu, but after that it was a dog-fight between West Potomac and Woodson. Moffitt provided the knockout punch for the Wolverines to beat out Woodson, both in AAC qualifying times.

Other AAA swims came from Brandon Fiala in the boys’ 200 IM (1:51.52), finishing second to A. Seliskar, Abi Speers (Langley) in the girls’ 50 freestyle (23.32) and Jenna Van Camp in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.49). Speers and Fiala would also get their AAC cuts in the 100 freestyle (51.55) and 100 breaststroke (57.54), respectively.

No less impressive were the number of All-American Consideration qualifying swimmers. Including, Cyrus Hashemi, winner in the 200 freestyle (1:40.09) and 100 freestyle (45.85), Falls Church’s Laura Schwartz in the 200 IM (2:03.93) and 500 freestyle (4:57.80), Chantilly’s Chris Grimmett-Norris behind Cyrus in the 200 freestyle in 1:40.85, Oakton’s Laura Branton in the 100 butterfly with a 56.49, Carli Molano in the 50 freestyle, despite falling to second behind Speers, finishing in 23.80, Langley’s Ryan Natal in the 100 butterfly (50.47), Philip Hu in the 100 backstroke (50.78), as well as Michael Herrmann (South County) in 51.16, Moffitt in the 100 backstroke (55.96), and Bo Ilgenfritz (57.20) and Rachel Canty (1:04.98) in the 100 breaststroke, not to mention the many relays that achieved their AAC times as well.

Oakton rolled at the 2012 Concorde District championship meet. Janet Hu was sensation for the Cougars as was brother Philip Hu, Conor Murphy, Brian Phillips, and Carter Sharer.

Oakton’s girls repeated as Concorde District champions on Saturday night, Jan. 28, at Cub Run RECenter. Led by sophomore Janet Hu, Oakton’s girls did not let runner-up Chantilly get even close, winning 483 to 371.5. Complete results and times available here.

The Cougar boys were even more dominant, racking up 506 points over the Chargers. Chantilly finished second with 412 points. Westfield was third on boy sides with 334.5 (girls) and 332.5 (boys) points. Their top end talent will be hard for the likes of Woodson and Madison to compete with next week at the regional championship.

It was automatic for Hu, who won convincingly in the girls’ 200 IM (2:02.79) and 100 backstroke (55.17). She is the defending state champion in the 200 IM and 50 freestyle, and also the Northern Region record holder in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Logan Coulson-Moore blew away the field in the 200 freestyle, winning by nearly five seconds, in 1:55.51. She finished second to Hu in the 100 backstroke in 58.66.

Carli Molano made a case for why she is the area’s best sprinter. The Westfield senior won the 50 freestyle in 23.94 and the 100 freestyle in 52.19, surging ahead of runner-up Laura Branton, who finished in 24.63 and 53.93, respectively.

Rachel Anderson (Centreville) got the win in the 100 butterfly (59.11) over Oakton’s Gillian Crews (59.41). Crews teammates, Julia Capobianco and Gabriela Galvez, would clean of the top four in 1:00.22 and 1:01.43.

It was that kind of night for Oakton’s girls, who did a great job on Friday night of placing their swimmers in the top heats on Saturday.

In one of the few races that didn’t feature an Oakton swimmer, the girls’ 500 freestyle came down to the wire between Chantilly’s Maggie Shaw and Robinson‘s Kathleen Dodson. Shaw would best Dodson by less than half a second, winning 5:15.41 to 5:15.80.

Finishing up the individual events was Jenna Van Camp (Herndon). The Olympic Trials qualifier finished in 1:03.89. She is in a league of her own in the breaststroke event this year.

Oakton’s boys were bolstered by wins in the 200 medley (1:38.04) and 200 freestyle (1:29.90) relays. They would disqualify in the 400 freestyle relay, where they would most likely have finished second to Chantilly’s winning squad of William Schulte, Evan Baker, Christopher Grimmett-Norris, and Brian Rothschild, who finished in 3:15.41.

Chantilly may have come up short in the team competition, but junior Grimmett-Norris did not leave empty handed. He took first in the boys’ 200 freestyle (1:42.26), beating out Oakton’s Philip Hu (1:43.79).

While the top-dogs fought for first, the race for third was even more thrilling. Conor Cudahy (Herndon) touched first, just ahead of Oakton’s Brian Phillips (1:46.96) and teammate Johnathan Nguyen (1:47.08), to take third in 1:46.81.

Grimmett-Norris had a much closer race in the 500 freestyle, as Phillips refused to shrink from the competition. Grimmett-Norris got the win in 4:42.10, just ahead of Phillips in 4:42.83. Cudahy finished third in 4:45.55.

Hu showed Robinson’s Matthew Jones and Westfield’s Richard Xue why he’s still one of the best butterfliers in the region, winning the 100 butterfly event in a blazing 50.58. Jones finished second in 52.10; Xue was third in 53.50.

Xue was the big winner in the boys’ 200 IM (1:56.85), in a close race with Oakton’s Denny Nguyen (1:56.94). Rothschild faded to third in 1:58.28.

Xue’s teammate Brandon Fiala continued to impress winning both the 50 freestyle in 21.47 and the 100 breaststroke in a blistering 57.78. It was not even close. Jones was second in 22.05, just .04 seconds ahead of Carter Sharer (Oakton) in third.

Sharer got the win in the 100 freestyle with a 48.28. His only challenger was teammate Conor Murphy, who took second in 48.45.

Murphy would take first later in the meet, winning the 100 backstroke by a wide margin, with a time of 52.73. Matthew Glowacki was second in 55.71.

The AAA Northern Region championship meet gets started on Tuesday, Jan. 31, with girls’ diving. Boys’ diving will follow the next night, Feb. 1. Swimming prelims will be split up this year, with the girls on Thursday and the boys on Friday. Finals will take place Saturday night with two heats in each event.

RFTW's look at this weekend's Va. AAA Patriot District Championship Swim & Dive Meet, taking place January 27-28 at Cub Run RECenter. Oakton is hoping to get back to championship form this season. Their girls are the defending district champions, while their boys were the runner ups after winning the district, region, and state the year before. Expect Chantilly and Westfield to make things difficult for the Cougars as they put their star studded line ups on the the blocks.

Few districts in the state can reload the way Concorde District teams do each season. That much is obvious when you look at the contenders lineups heading into the Concorde District Championship meet, on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27 and 28, at Cub Run RECenter in Chantilly.

A Concorde District team has won a Va. AAA Swimming and Diving state championship every year since 2006, either on the girls’ or boys’ side. You could go further back if you included Robinson‘s championships won before they moved to the Concorde District in 2005.

Those championship runs started during this meet, and Oakton‘s girls’ squad (7-0) is looking to get off on the right foot by repeating as district champions. Meanwhile, their boys’ team (7-0) is looking to get back to their 2010 form, when they were district, region, and state champions. They will have to go through Chantilly (5-2), who is loaded with talent in each and every one of its classes this year. Defending district, region, and state champion Westfield Bulldogs will also get in the mix, despite a 4-3 record.

Diving begins at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, swimming preliminaries at 5:30 p.m. Swimming finals kick off at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday

Janet Hu headlines for the Oakton girls. She is expected to dominate in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke, where she is in a league of her own. The 16-year-old sophomore is one of two high school swimmers in the area with three or more Olympic Trials cuts.

The other Olympic Trials qualifier in the meet is Herndon‘s Jenna Van Camp (senior), who is the top seed in the 100 breaststroke.

Both Hu and Van Camp will be chased by Robinson star, Rachel Canty, seeded second in both events. If Canty has a good race, she could pull an upset over the speedy Van Camp in the 100 breaststroke.

There are no clear favorites in the remainder of the events heading into prelims, but Friday night may clarify who is ready to swim at a high level this championship season and who was caught sleeping.

Robinson’s Kathleen Dodson is seeded first in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, but Maggie Shaw has the speed and ability to win both races. Shaw’s teammate, Logan Coulson-Moore (Chantilly), will also challenge in the 200 freestyle.

As per usual in the sprint events, the 50 freestyle is wide open. Gillian Crews (Oakton), Abby McCranie (Centreville), Stephanie Hallock (Oakton), and Sydney Pereira (Chantilly) all have the ability to get up for the quick lap, but top-seeded Carli Molano (Westfield) and third-seeded Laura Branton may have the edge in the race.

Molano and Branton are also the break-away favorites in the 100 freestyle. Crews will battle top-seeded Rachel Anderson (Centreville) in the 100 butterfly later in the meet.

Despite a host of highly slotted swimmers, Oakton’s real strength is its depth, which should propel them ahead of the rest of district. There closest dual meet this season was a 45 point win over Chantilly. Their ability to place a large portion of their girls in Saturday night’s ‘A’ finals makes it difficult for the rest of the district to match their pace.

“We’re focused on swimming well Friday night, so we can swim well on Saturday night,” said Oakton coach Parker Ramsdell. “Getting as many of our girls as possible under regional cuts will set us up to win this weekend, and next weekend.”

In the boys’ side of the district meet, nothing is certain. Chantilly only lost to Oakton by 5 points a few weeks back. Westfield was blown out by Oakton during the week of the Tom Dolan and Winter Classic championship meets, when both teams were missing many of their key year-round swimmers. At full strength, the Bulldogs could be a different team.

“Our boys have to swim out of their minds on Friday and Saturday night if we want to win,” said coach Ramsdell. “Nothing is guaranteed. It will take everyone to win this. We need to get as many of our boys back on Saturday night as possible.”

Philip Hu (Oakton), Brian Rothschild (Chantilly), and Richard Xue (Westfield) will have to step up for their respective teams, individually and in the relays.

All three will meet in the boys’ 100 butterfly. Xue is the top seed going into Friday’s prelims. He will try to hold that spot at finals, but Rothschild and Hu are two of the best butterfliers in the region, and could pull away from Xue. Rothschild and Xue will meet earlier in the meet in the 200 IM, where Rothschild is favored to win.

In the first individual event of the night, Chris Grimmett-Norris and Hu will face off in the boys’ 200 freestyle. Grimmett-Norris is the top seed, but Hu has plenty of speed and stamina to snag this race from the Chantilly junior. Expect Hu’s teammate Brian Phillips to compete with Herndon’s Jonathan Nguyen and Conor Cudahy for third place, in a race that could set the tone for the remainder of the meet.

Grimmett-Norris leads the way for the Chargers in the 500 freestyle as well. Phillips is seeded second, Cudahy is third, and Will Schulte is fourth. All four swimmers are within ten seconds of each others best times.

Westfield could get a boost in the final two individual events. Matthew Glowacki is seeded second for the Bulldogs in the 100 backstroke. He will meet Oakton senior Conor Murphy in a race that will be sure to be a close finish.

Brandon Fiala is the overall seed in the 100 breaststroke. David Stewart (Chantilly), Ryan Santoro (Oakton), and Denny Nguyen (Oakton) will probably fall back to fight for second behind the Westfield junior.

Fiala’s other event is the 50 freestyle, where it is anyone’s race between himself, Carter Sharer (Oakton), and Matt Jones (Robinson).

Sharer will also swim the 100 freestyle, where he has the top position going into prelims. He hopes to hold on over teammate Murphy, J. Nguyen, Johann Shim, and at least three other swimmers who could jump up into the final heat. This is a race no one should look past on Friday if they expect to make it back to the ‘A’ final on Saturday.

The top 16 swimmers from prelims advance to finals, with the top eight making the ‘A’ final, guaranteeing their team at least 11 points for eighth place. Points quickly drop off after the top eight, making Friday night’s finishes extremely important in such a stacked district.

Making the ‘A’ final is also important for the teams who hope to compete for the regional championship next week. Only the top six swimmers in the ‘A’ final advance to regionals. You can also qualify for regionals by achieving a cut time at any point in the season. Each team can qualify up to four swimmers for the regional championship meet.

That list of undefeated teams got smaller over the weekend, as we put 2012's first week of high school swimming behind us.

The new year was off to an exciting start, with close races and close meets across the region. The championship picture is becoming more clear now that teams have several meets under their belts. However, the dual meet season is just practice for area teams; district and divisional championships are not decided by dual meet records, so even undefeated teams know they need to keep training hard.

Wootton girls roll; WJHS boys sneak by despite missing key swimmers

Wootton girls were dominant against the Wildcats on Saturday, but the boys team squandered and opportunity against a depleted Walter Johnson boys’ team. [read more here]

Churchill sweeps B-CC

Churchill looked like the paramount team we’ve come to expect, commanding the meet from start to finish. B-CC showed it has some talent, but it lacks the depth to compete for a divisional title against teams like Churchill and Whitman. [read more here]

Woodson remains undefeated; beats TC Williams

*provided by Woodson Swim & Dive

Despite the long layoff over winter break, Woodson was able to rattle off 34 season’s best times to win 224-91 (boys), 213-99 (girls) over TC Williams.

The Cavalier boys and girls swept diving (1,2,3,4) with Eric Pavord and Samantha Eldridge each taking first. More than half of the divers recording season high scores.

James Chung (Woodson) recorded his first individual region time of the season in the boys’ 200 IM in 2 minutes 3.77 seconds.

Gloriya Mavrova won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Titans.

Leah Rogers (Woodson) easily eclipsed the region qualifying time in girls’ 200 IM (2:13.55), cutting nearly 2 seconds from her personal best.

Titans’ captain, senior Abby Cox scored a regional cut in the 200 IM (2:13.04), winning the event.

One of the standout performances of the night came form Katie McGraw (Woodson), who crushed her personal best time, dropping five seconds, in the girls’ 200 freestyle, and chopped 15 seconds off her previous best in the 500 freestyle for second place, behind Cox, a two-time state qualifier in the event.

Lawrence Lincoln (TC Williams) tied for first in the 50 free style and anchored the winning boys’ 400 freestyle relay.

Despite the dominance by Woodson, the meet ended with excitement. The last event of the night, the girls’ 400 free relay, was decided by .01, with TC edging out the Cavs. The team of A. Cox, Charlotte Sackett, Colleen Cox, and Mavrova set a team new record.

Next week will match the Woodson boys and girls (5-0) against the West Springfield Spartans (5-0, 5-0) in a meet that may very well determine the regular season titles for both.

Patriot beats Broad Run

*provided by Broad Run Swimming

In a meet filled with tight finishes, Patriot High School defeated the Broad Run boys’ and girls’ swim teams in Saturday’s Cedar Run District meet. The Patriot boys won 163-123, while the girls won 166-120.

The night started off well for the Patriot boys, winning the opening 200 medley relay in 1:44.73, with excellent swims by the young team of Marcus Quint, Andrew Proper, Thomas Scot, and Gavin Graham.

Proper was a double winner in the 200 freestyle (1:51.89) and 500 freestyle (5:07.18).

Broad Run seniors Alan Horback and Jacob Leidy each won two individual events with Northwest Regional qualifying times.

In the closest race of the night, Horback edged out Patriot’s Quint in the 100 free, 50.32 to 50.34. Horback also won the 50 free in 22.96.

Leidy’s victories came in the 200 IM (2:01.46) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.18).

Sophomore Jack Morrisroe (Broad Run) also took first in the 100 back stroke (59.58) and second in the 100 butterfly (57.42).

Horback, Leidy and Morrisroe teamed with Michael Kopecky for a win in the 200 freestyle relay in a season-best time of 1:34.28.

After opening her college career by winning the CAA Swimmer of the Year honors, 2008 All-Met Swimmer of the Year Ashley Danner (Lake Braddock) entered last night’s opening to the conference championships with high expectations.

Danner quickly showed she is up to the challenge, winning the 200 yard individual medley on Thursday night and breaking her own conference record in the process, finishing with a NCAA ‘B’ standard time of 1:58.32.

“I think so,” Danner said when asked if the race set the tone for the weekend. “When I saw the time I was really surprised. I was really happy so hopefully I can keep it up throughout the rest of the week”

Former Walter Johnson standout and Towson junior Meredith Budner won the title in the 500 freestyle with a NCAA ‘B’ standard 4:42.92. 2008 All-Met sophomore Molly Emery (William & Mary/Lake Braddock) finished sixth in 4:55.46.

Earlier in the meet, two-time All-Met David Kiss swam his first collegiate finals and the former Edison star nearly opened the newest chapter of his career with a title.

Kiss finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:51.13, finishing just behind Drexel’s T.J. Southmayd – who surprised the crowd in Lane 7 by taking the title in 1:50.46.

“I’ve been training really hard this year and I was really excited coming in here,” Kiss said. “I knew I could pull out best [time and] top three, that was my goal, so I was hoping. I got a best time so I’m happy for it and I’ll keep training hard for next year.”

Former Yorktown standout Katie Radloff took second in the women’s 50 freestyle, finishing in a time of 22.74, just one-hundredth of a second behind UNC-Wilmington’s Caitlin Kirsteier. William & Mary freshman Elizabeth Hall (Chantilly) took fifth with a time of 23.56.

Westfield grad Eric Knight, the 2008 CAA Swimmer of the Year, took fourth in the 50 freestyle with a NCAA ‘B’ standard time of 20.13

In the 1-meter diving event, George Mason’s Derrick Butts (Paint Branch) and Bryan Bahr (Mount Vernon) took second and third.

George Mason senior Steven Benecki (Chantilly) took fifth in the 500 freestyle (4:33.58), while William & Mary sophomore Stephen Fay (Chantilly) finished eighth (4:39.07).

Robinson graduate Robby Munch was part of UNCW’s winning 200 freestyle relay and also finished eighth in the 50 freestyle (20.66).

Osbourn Park standout and UNCW freshman Carly Tanner was a member of the Seahawks second-place 400 freestyle relay (3:43.24), while former teammate and All-Met Gabrielle Mizerak swam for William & Mary’s 400 free relay (4th – 3:47.03).

Snow on Saturday forced teams to prepare for district championships earlier than anticipated, as three of the four districts in the Northern Region held timed finals and relays on Friday night around the area.

Madison’s boys’ and girls’ teams took home titles in the Liberty District, W.T. Woodson’s boys’ and girls’ earned championships in the Patriot and the Oakton’s boys and Robinson’s girls won titles in the Concorde.

The National District finals will be held tonight at Washington-Lee Pool.

It was a weekend dominated by youth, as several younger swimmers turned in breakout performances in the meets. A freshman boy and sophomore girl won a title and two sophomore girls won two events in the Concorde, a freshman girl and sophomore boy took a title and a sophomore girl won two in the Patriot and three freshmen girls, a sophomore boy and sophomore girl won in the Liberty.

CONCORDE DISTRICT: FULL RESULTS (.doc)

The Oakton boys’ win ended one of Robinson’s dominant streaks, as the Rams had taken home 12 straight district titles before the Cougars halted things this weekend. Oakton finished with 492 points to Robinson‘s 404, with Herndon taking third at 334.
