Jack Conger finished his first U.S. Olympic Trials strong with a top five finish in the men’s 200 backstroke.
On the final day at NCSA Junior Nationals, all the usual suspects could be found in the top heats, performing as they had all week. Katie Ledecky and Jack Conger earned the female and male performance of the meet awards.
Ledecky continues to show her versatility in the freestyle events, winning the 200 free in commanding fashion. Haase one win away from a sweep of the breaststroke events, after 50 breaststroke win on Thursday.
Montgomery County teams shined at this year’s Maryland 4A/3A Swimming Championship, dominating the team competition. 16 state records were broken by MCPS swimmers, as Walter Johnson’s boys and Whitman’s girls claimed their school’s first state titles.
Montgomery County teams will head to their first Maryland 4A-3A Swimming Championship meet on Saturday, Feb. 25. The county boasts most of the top swimmers in the state, and they have a chance to rewrite the record books this weekend. Check out RFTW’s preview of this year’s state meet inside.
Jack Conger flirts with 500-free record; Gonzaga wins team title at Washington Metro Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships
Gonzaga enters this week’s championship meets as one of the hottest teams in the area, coming off wins at the National Catholic and WMPSSDL championship meets. They will be tested this weekend at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championship. The Metros finals are Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center, where the best teams from Montgomery County, WMPSSDL, and DCIAA come together for one of the best collections of high school talent in on the East Coast.
Walter Johnson won the MCPS Division I Championship after a close meet with Churchill’s boys. Churchill girls beat Wootton and Whitman after placing first, third, and fourth in diving to give the Bulldogs a lead going into the swimming events.
Phelps joked about going for Erik Vendt’s pool record in the men’s 200 IM before his race on Saturday, but with 100 meters to go, Phelps had a shot.
Allison Schmitt breaks Janet Evans’ 1988 pool record. Evans swam in the event’s “B” Final, moments before Schmitt’s swim. Evans is making hoping to make the 2012 Olympic team after coming out of retirement last year.
