Yorktown nearly doubled their nearest competitors in points on Saturday night at the 2012 National District Championship. Washington-Lee boys repeated in a total team effort.

Few teams have enjoyed the type of success that Yorktown girls swimming and diving has in the National District over the district’s nearly two decade history. This year was no different, as the Patriot ladies (7-0) won their 19th consecutive National District championship by nearly 300 points, over second-place Washington-Lee.

Yorktown poses with district championship plaque (photo by Wayne Stocks)

Yorktown’s dominance was complete, returning every single girl swimmer from Friday night’s prelims to the ‘A’ final, and winning all three relays.

In a much closer decision, Washington-Lee’s boys’ team was able to beat Yorktown to repeat as district champions, winning 404 to 399. Falls Church girls’ and boys’ finished third. Complete results here.

As Yorktown’s girls asserted themselves on the district, no individual swimmer was more impressive than Falls Church’s Laura Schwartz, who continued to show why she’s one of the best all-around swimmers in the Northern Region.

The Falls Church junior cruised in the 100 butterfly, winning in 57.60 over a trio of Yorktown girls, who placed second through fourth. The 100 breaststroke would be more of the same for Schwartz, who was untouchable, winning easily with a time of 1:07.24.

<img class=" wp-image-13053" title="Stephanie Romano 500 freestyle" src="http://reachforthewall.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Stephanie-Romano_500-Free_IMG_7163-1024x682.jpg" alt="Stephanie Romano impressed all night with two individual wins in the 200 and 500 free. (photo by Wayne Stocks)

Senior Stephanie Romano and junior Abigail Young were the big point scorers for the Yorktown ladies. Romano cruised in the 200 freestyle (1:58.77) and 500 freestyle (5:15.58), winning both by wide margins.

Young had a slightly tougher race in the 200 IM. Laura Schwartz’s sister, freshman Julia Schwartz, gave chase in the first 100 yards, but could not hang with the Yorktown swimmer in the breaststroke, who won 2:15.10 to 2:17.71. Young would beat J. Schwartz convincingly in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.13 to 1:03.71.

While Yorktown’s stars shined brightly, it was the overwhelming consistency of the Patriot girls that was so impressive, particularly their fantastic class of freshmen girls.

Lauren Allard won the 100 freestyle (56.45) and placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.16).

Kirby Nassetta placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:02.79) and 100 butterfly (59.71).

Sydney Stocks took third in the 50 freestyle in 25.81, behind the events winner, junior teammate Ellie Belilos (25.37). Falls Church’s Haley McLean was second (25.80).

Amanda Didawick was third in the 100 butterfly behind Nassetta. Sophomore Grace Greenwood was second behind Romano in the 500 freestsyle (5:32.10).

Izzy Pasternak was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.10, just beating Didawick (1:04.70).

On Thursday night, Hayfield’s Anise Muir won the girls’ diving event with a score of 323.10. But was followed by Yorktown’s Mason Nassetta (312.35) and Elena Bavolack (311.25).

That sort of depth is what will make Yorktown so competitive next week against the likes of Langley, Woodson, and Oakton at the AAA Northern Region championship meet at Oakmarr RECenter.

For the boys, Washington-Lee began their championship run with a win from Carl Buergler. He was in a class of his own, posting a score of 514.25, beating Yorktown’s Hunter Simmons (357.55) and Falls Church’s Tyler Smith (309.95).

It was a total team effort for the Generals, who won despite not winning a single event all night. What they lacked in star power, they made up in depth. The Generals took second in all three boys’ relays and returned at least three swimmers for Saturday night’s final in all but one event.

They also got some help from Stuart and Hayfield’s superstars, who kept Yorktown from taking top points in several events.

Stuart’s Christian Rowcliffe won both the 50 freestyle (22.57) and 100 freestyle (48.40). Ben Lambert (Hayfield) took second in 22.87. Lambert would later win the 100 butterfly (53.36). Yorktown’s Max Fish would place second in butterfly with a 54.11.

Stuart senior Eli Bass won a close race in the 200 IM (2:02.22) against Yorktown’s Will Tarkenton (2:02.79) and Hayfield’s Joel DeSatnick (2:02.84).

After falling behind Bass and Tarkenton, DeSatnick roared back in the breaststroke to take the lead. It was not enough though, as Bass surged in the freestyle to snatch the win from the Hayfield junior.

DeSatnick would get his chance to shine, however, as he won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.95 over Fish (1:01.50).

Bass would get a second win in the 500 freestyle where he swam to an easy win in a time of 4:54.68. Washington-Lee’s Michael Emanuel gave chase in the first 200, but faded to second (5:09.83), as Bass sailed into the finish, 15 seconds ahead.

It was a dogfight in the boys’ 100 backstroke between Tarkenton, Jay Delancey (W-L), and James Sturges (Falls Church). The Yorktown senior, Tarkenton, got the better of the two sophomores, winning in 56.17. Delancey was second in 56.74; Sturges third in 57.24.

The AAA Northern Region championship meet gets started on Tuesday, Jan. 31, with girls’ diving. Boys’ diving will follow the next night, Feb. 1. Swimming relims this year will be split up, with the girls on Thursday and the boys on Friday. Finals will take place Saturday night with two heats in each event.

Virginia AAA Northern Region teams begin their post-season meets this week with district championships; diving begins Thursday, Jan. 26.

Yorktown girls’ team (7-0) are again undefeated this season in the National District, having not lost a regular season or National District Championship meet in over a decade. But Washington-Lee (6-1) and Falls Church (5-2) have plenty of their swimmers seeded top three at this year’s championship meet, and will try their best to usurp the Patriot ladies.

On the boys’ side, an undefeated Washington-Lee boys’ team are the reigning district champions and are not ready to relinquish their crown. Events begin each night at 5:30 p.m. at the brand-new Yorktown Pool in Arlington. Swimming preliminaries will be on Friday, Jan. 27, with finals the next night, Jan. 28.

Laura Schwartz competing at the 2011 Winter Classic (Bryan Flaherty/The Washington Post)

Hoping for a big weekend is All-American Laura Schwartz, who is seeded first in the 100 butterfly (59.57) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.22). The Falls Church junior is looking to advance to her third consecutive state meet, having been a finalist in her first two state championships in multiple events.

Yorktown’s star senior, Stephanie Romano, will do her best to negate the points Schwartz is guaranteed to score. Romano is seeded well ahead of the field in the 200 freestyle (1:59.78) and 500 freestyle (5:17.34).

Both swimmers have yet to be pushed in their top events this year and are looking ahead to the fierce competition at the AAA Northern Region Championship next week.

Romano will get some help from teammate Abigail Young (junior) who is seeded first in the girls’ 200 individual medley (2:17.43) and 100 backstroke (1:02.16), but L. Schwartz’s sister Julia Schwatrz will be at her heels in both events, seeded with a 2:20.66 in the IM and a 1:04.99 in backstroke.

Yorktown girls’ team hold seven of the twelve top seeds, including Elena Bavolack in diving, and two of three relays.

First place individual winners earn 20 points, where as second place is worth just 17 points. Relays, which are often the key to winning in the post-season, are worth 40 points for first place, and quickly drops off to 34 points for second place; 32 points for third. All 16 finalists score points in descending order at districts.

“Our goal is always to keep the girls’ record intact. We do that by getting our girls back [on Saturday] in the final heat,” said Yorktown coach Claire DiCesare. Even in events Yorktown is not seeded first, they almost always have all four girls seeded in the top eight.

Schwartz and Haley McLean, both freshmen, will try to prevent Yorktown from sweeping the meet’s events. Both have been huge additions to Falls Church’s relays, who are seeded behind Yorktown in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, and first in the 400 freestyle relay. Washington-Lee is third in all three.

McLean is seeded first in the 50 freestyle (26.10) and 100 freestyle (58.05), although leads neither event by a very wide margin. W-L sophomores Rebecca Palacios (50 free) and Belinda Vu (100 free) will try to knock her out of the top spot.

“Yorktown is the powerhouse,” said Washington-Lee coach Kristina Dorville. “This is the first year we’ve had a line up that could compete with them.”

Jessica Green was a welcome addition to Generals when she transferred into the area. She’ll chase Young and J. Schwartz in the 200 IM, seeded with a 2:21.34. She is also seeded fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:03.70), behind Ellie Belilos, Amanda Didawick, and Kirby Nassetta, all from Yorktown, who will all be chasing L. Schwartz.

The boys’ meet promises to be an exciting match-up between Washington-Lee (7-0), Yorktown (6-1), Falls Church (5-2), and J.E.B. Stuart (4-3), all stacked at the top together. W-L won the regular season crown, but were nearly knocked off by Yorktown last week, and will have to compete with an experienced Stuart squad and Falls Church’s young group as well.

“Our boys want to stay on top,” said coach Dorville, who won her first National District Championship last season in her seventh year at W-L. “It had been 12 years since W-L had won the boys’ title, and we’re not ready to give that up. We’ve worked really hard on team unity and team spirt, and we pride ourselves on being together as a team. Our boys are pumped up for [Friday and Saturday].”

It will take the Generals’ full contingent to ward off the hungry Patriot and Jaguar boys’ teams, who both have upset on their minds.

“It’s about who wants it the most,” said Falls Church coach Clayton Joyner, in his first year with Falls Church, and a Jaguar alumnus himself. “We were fifth last year. All I wanted to do this season was put our boys in a situation to win. There is always a chance. A lot can happen at a district meet.”

Washington-Lee will get a boost from senior diver Carl Buergler, who is the reigning state champion and one of the region’s premier divers. No one in the district is even close to him in the event, making this a competition for second and third place points between Tyler Smith (Falls Church) and Hunter Simmons (Yorktown).

When the swimming events start on Friday night, seniors Eli Bass and Christian Rowcliffe hope to go out on a high note for Stuart. Bass is the top seed in the 200 individual medley (2:01.22) and 500 freestyle (4:55.50). Rowcliffe is seeded first in the 100 freestyle (48.70) and third in what will be a tightly contested 50 freestyle with a 22.80. They make Stuart’s relays very dangerous, which are seeded first in the two freestyle relays.

Hayfield’s super star freshman Ben Lambert and junior Joel DeSatnick hope to spoil the meet for the seniors. While Hayfield (2-5) is not a factor in the team competition, these two boys could help determine the meet by taking much needed points from the top teams.

Lambert is seeded first in the 50 freestyle (22.29) and 100 butterfly (55.85), while DeSatnick is seeded right behind Bass in the 200 IM with a 2:01.22.

Bass and DeSatnick will also see Yorktown’s Will Tarkenton (senior), seeded third with a 2:05.98. Lampert will be challenged in the 100 butterfly by Philip O’Doherty (W-L), James Sturges (Falls Church), and Max Fish (Yorktown), whose coaches all expect big things from their young stars in the championship environment.

One of the best races of the meet will be between DeSatnick and Fish, who will battle for first in 100 breaststroke. Fish is seeded one-tenth of a second behind DeSatnick, who is seeded with a 1:01.87. Both are just off the Virginia state cut (1:01.39)

Other races to watch will be Michael Emanuel (Washington-Lee) and Ryan Davenport (Falls Church) in the 200 freestyle, and Sturges versus Jay Delancey (W-L) in the 100 backstroke.

Emanuel and Davenport are less than a second apart, seeded 1:55.17 and 1:56.03, respectively. They are also seeded second and third in the 500 freestyle, although quite a bit behind the top-seeded Bass.

In backstroke, Sturges (57.26) and Delancey (57.38) will feel pressure from Yorktown’s duo, Tarkenton (58.75) and Jason Henley (59.95), who have stepped up for the Patriots all season.

“If the boys have a shot, we need Fish and Tarkenton to pull out some top finishes,” said DiCesare.

Mount Vernon, Edison, and Wakefield High Schools will also be participating in the championship meet. Where their swimmers end up on Saturday night can determine the outcome of the meet for the other teams.

We’re approaching the beginning of the championship season, and several teams are looking strong going into the final meets of the dual meet season. But an undefeated season won’t mean much to these teams if they can’t win their district or divisional championship title.

Woodson, Yorktown, and Oakton are undefeated on both girls’ and boys’ sides in the Northern Region with one meet to go. Churchill, Wootton, Walter Johnson, and Whitman are battling it out in the MCPS’ top division, and are looking ahead to their first Maryland states appearances.

Featured Meet of the Week: Woodson tops West Springfield to advance to 6-0

In a clash between two of the region’s top-tier teams, Woodson and West Springfield both entered the district meet with 5-0 records. Woodson left 6-0, and with a clear path to the Patriot District championship. [Click here to keep reading]

Clarksburg boys keep three-year winning streak alive; Watkins Mill girls win

Clarksburg boy’s haven’t lost a meet since the 2008-2009 season, but with a season ending injury to the Coyotes’ star junior, Andrew Qian, it looked like Watkins Mill had a shot to steal the win this week.

But despite three disqualifications, Clarksburg managed to beat the Wolverines boys by one point, 85-84. Watkins Mill’s girls’ team won 94-73.

Key swims came from Michael Le who won the 100 breaststroke and Josh Kiehl in the 50 freestyle. Jared White also performed well, winning both the 200 and 500 freestyle events for Clarksburg.

It was a team effort for the Watkins Mill girls’ team, who picked up the majority of the seconds, thirds, and fourths. Kelly Lewis was the only double winner for the Wolverine ladies, winning the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events.

Churchill handles division one newcomer Blair

*excerpts taken from Churchill team page

On Saturday, the Churchill Bulldogs faced off against division one newcomer, Blair Blazers. For the fourth meet in a row, the boys started the meet by taking first and second in the opening 200 medley relay.

In the first individual event, the 200 freestyle, Joey Bieda, Chris Wysocki and Colin Asbury swept. The boys’ team (4-0) were well on their way to defeating the Blazers 122.5 to 48.5. Harrison Gu (200 IM) and Austin Cole (50 free) won the remaining events of the first half. Tim Faerber returned this week to win diving.

The break did not slow down the swimmers. Eric Eig, Andy Rosenthal and Eric Shiang kept the wins coming by sweeping the 100 butterfly. Then, Cole (100 free) and Gu (100 breast) won their second events of the meet. In the end, the boys won eight out of the nine individual events.

Jack Foster was the lone winner for the Blazers. He took first in the 500 freestyle, and a close second in the 200 IM.

Like last week, the Bulldogs’ “A” relay faced a battle in the 400 freestyle relay, and again, Cole anchored the relay to guarantee victory. This week he was joined by Asbury, Bieda and Wysocki. They were challenged by the Bulldogs “B” relay of Eig, Rosenthal, Steve Ge and Odin Soevik, who came in second.

The girls have not lost a race since December 17, 2011, and nothing would change this week. Against the Blazers, the girls (3-1) won every single individual and relay race on their way to a 127-44 victory.

Shannon Ridge, Elizabeth Gelbaugh, Elaina Gu and Michelle Illig won the opening 200 medley relay.

Natalya Ares followed the relay victory by winning the 200 free. She would also win the 100 butterfly. The girls then swept the next five events.

Gu was a double winner in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, along with Alicia Tiberino, who won the 50 and 100 freestyle events.

Featured Meet of the Week: South County versus Lake Braddock in a Patriot District showdown

Led by senior Michael Herrmann, South County’s boys swim and dive team beat Lake Braddock on Friday night, 161-154, for the first time since the school opened in 2005. South County’s girls didn’t fare as well against the Bruins, falling 143-172.

Herrmann was untouchable on Friday night, placing first in each of the four events in which he competed. He won the 50 freestyle in 22.53 seconds, the 100 butterfly in 52.14, provided the key leg in the 200 medley and anchored the 400 freestyle relay to seal the win for the Stallions.

Lake Braddock graduated six state qualifiers from their boys team last year, but with freshmen such as Cole McGarry, who won the 200 individual medley (2:05.18) and finished second to Herrmann in the 100 butterfly (54.06), the Bruins’ future looks bright.

On the girls side, Lake Braddock’s team received an influx of freshmen talent this year, including sprinter Karina Kolb.

Kolb out-touched the competition in both the 50 freestyle (25.62) and 100 freestyle (55.62), the latter by .01 seconds.

Senior Alyssa McGarry was also a double winner for the Bruins. She cruised to wins in the 200 freestyle (2:01.88) and 500 freestyle (5:24.40).

They were aided by a first-through-third sweep by divers Lizzie White, Stephanie Chewning, and Rebecca Shelton.

The Bruin girls won all three relays by clear margins, making it difficult for South County to mount any sort of comeback.

The lone double winner for South County’s girls was Brooke Malone, who won the 200 individual medley (2:16.18) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.46) by just .39 seconds combined.

Bruins boys win big; Lake Braddock girls use full team effort to beat West Potomac ladies

On Saturday, Lake Braddock’s boys rebounded from Friday’s loss to beat West Potomac 209.5 to 105.5 and the Lake Braddock girls pulled out a close victory over a strong West Potomac team, 162-150.

The divers came through again, this time taking all four of the top positions. The swim team added second and third-place finishes in three events, as well as a key first-second finish by Sophie Chase and Jordan Parry in the 100 breaststroke.

West Potomac standouts Reanna Dona (senior) and Hellen Moffitt (junior) posted first-place finishes in four individual events and two relays for the Wolverines. Dona won the 100 fresstyle in 54.49 and the 100 backstroke in 1:04.02. Moffitt matched her success, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:58.16 and the 100 butterfly in 59.02.

Woodson’s boys and girls improve to 4-0 with wins over Lee and Annandale

On Friday night, Woodson beat Lee 246-60 (boys) and 244-70 (girls).

Woodson’s divers swept the events first through fourth. Declan Casey won for the boys, while Mackenzie Wessling won on the girls side.

The meet was largely a race between Woodson swimmers, as the Caviliers rolled over the Lancers.

Bo Ilgenfritz broke a team record in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.46, also achieving his state cut time in the event.

Both 200 medley relay teams were under state qualifying time (1:40.58 & 1:40.65), but only one is allowed to represent Woodson at the championship meet in February.

Five other swimmers reached regional qualifying cuts in individual events.

Saturday was much the same for Woodson, as the boys and girls teams locked up their fourth wins of the season against Annandale, 205-110 (girls) and 219-96 (boys).

Woodson’s boys took first place in all but one event, including Colin Chartier (200 freestyle), Nathan Pease (200 individual medley), Bo Ilgenfritz (50 freestyle), Eric Chesnut (100 butterfly), James Chung (100 freestyle), Will Palfey (500 freestyle), and Ryan Alexander (100 backstroke).

Battlefield hands Broad Run boy’s their first dual meet loss in five years

Defending district champion Battlefield High School defeated the Broad Run boys and girls swim teams in a Cedar Run district meet Saturday.

The Battlefield boys won 155-130 and the girls won 182-104, in fast meet where most of the event winners posted AAA northwestern regional or state qualifying times.

Although each boys team won four individual events and Broad Run won two of the three relays, Battlefield’s deep roster provided the Bobcats with the margin of victory.

Broad Run’s Jacob Leidy lead the Spartans with two wins and two regional qualifying times, in the 100 fly (54.46) and 100 back (55.34).

Alan Horback won the 50 free in 23.12, also a regional qualifying time. Justin Allen turned in a personal best 2:12.45 to win the 200 I.M. Leidy and Horback teamed with Jack Morrisroe and Max Bailey for a dramatic win in the 200 medley relay, where Horback out-touched Battlefield’s Bob Chapman to take first by five hundredths of a second, 1:44.05 to 1:44.10.

Anna Sarman’s win in the 500 free (5:57.59) prevented a sweep of the individual events by the Battlefield girls.

Broad Run’s next meet is January 7 against Patriot High School.

For the second consecutive year, Washington-Lee‘s boys swim team suffered the heartbreak of seeing a district championship slip away, falling by just eight points to Yorktown in the National District championship meet in Arlington on Monday night.

The Generals fell just short against a Patriots team that swept the titles at Washington-Lee pool, with the girls’ team turning in a dominant performance by scoring 606 points, 357 more than second-place Falls Church.

Washington-Lee’s boys’ opened the meet strong, winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.08. Senior Freddy Crawford then won the first of two events – - the 200 freestyle — in a district-record time of1:43.02, outracing Edison‘s Balazs Kiss (1:44.31). Crawford also took the title in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.75, two seconds ahead of Hayfield‘s Brian Heilbronner (49.76).

“I feel I’ve really stepped up to my potential,” Crawford said of a season in which he has proven to be a challenger at the regional and state level. “I had been swimming great in practice but it really hadn’t translated to meets until last June a little bit and then I gradually started to kind of understand where I was going. And this winter I just did awesome, [I] went 1:39 in the 200 free, and [was] nationally ranked. It’s pretty sweet to get back on top, so it was good.”

Yorktown picked up a win in the 200 individual medley from junior Matthew Essig (2:03.90) and had a balanced, depth-driven effort that would lead them to the win with 408 points – just eight points more than Washington-Lee.

The Generals had another double winner in senior Jake Huston, who took titles in both the 100 fly (53.70) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.32).

Other winners included Falls Church senior David Blincoe in the 50 free (22.88), Edison’s Kiss in the 500 free (4:42.57), Falls Church’s 200 freestyle relay of Michael Clingaman, Jesse Kane, Alex Howe and David Blincoe (1:32.73), Washington-Lee senior Matthew Allen (100 back, 58.55) and Washington-Lee’s 400 freestyle relay of Allen, David Palmer, Huston and Crawford (3:23.87).

On the girls’ side, the highlight of the night came from Yorktown senior Kaitlin Wolla, who bested a 100 butterfly district record that had stood since Feb. 5, 1999.

Wolla, who also won the title in the 50-freestyle with a time of 25.12, turned in an All-American consideration time of 56.71 to best Bridget Mallon’s 57.59 set 11 years ago.

“I’ve been nervous for about a week now,” Wolla said. “I knew that it was a possibility that I could get it, so I was hoping that I would. I was really nervous before my race, but it just kind of happened. All my team was behind my lane cheering for me that’s probably why I did it. If they weren’t there it probably would have been hopeless.”

Yorktown’s girls opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with Angela Slevin, Lydia Carpenter, Amanda Didawick and Carly Hinkle in a time of 1:55.77. Then Patriots never looked back, winning all but two of the remaining events.

Only Falls Church freshman Laura Schwartz was able to register a district title while not wearing a Yorktown cap. Schwartz took home championships in both the 200 IM (district record 2:09.00) and 500 freestyle (5:07.86).

Other winners for Yorktown on the night were sophomore Stephanie Romano (200 free, 1:59.58), junior Molly Merkel (100 free, 56.64), the 200 free relay of Wolla, Ann Carpenter, Lydia Carpenter and Abigail Ortmayer (1:43.13), Slevin (100 back, 1:01.18), senior Ortmayer (100 breast, 1:07.92) and the 400 freestyle relay of Wolla, Ann Carpenter, Merkel and Ortmayer – which, with a time of 3:44.47, knocked off the district record of 3:47.55 set by Yorktown in 2003.
