Gonzaga enters this week’s championship meets as one of the hottest teams in the area, coming off wins at the National Catholic and WMPSSDL championship meets. They will be tested this weekend at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championship. The Metros finals are Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center, where the best teams from Montgomery County, WMPSSDL, and DCIAA come together for one of the best collections of high school talent in on the East Coast.

A little snow didn’t slow down northern Virginia’s top teams, as perennial powerhouses concluded their regular season with wins. Maryland schools were forced to cancel their meets due to icy roads from the storm that hit Friday night.

Former All-Met and Olympian Kate Ziegler is seeded first in several events for this weekend’s PVS Senior Short Course Championships held at George Mason, and in some races might go up against some of the area’s top young swimmers. Five local swimmers qualified for the men’s NCAA swim championships, check out their seeds for the meet. Former All-Met Swimmer of the Year Eric Friedland is seeded third in the 200 breaststroke. Also, prepping for NCSA junior champs.

A roundup of results from the Virginia A-AA state championship, where the Brentsville boys’ won a title and Briar Woods girls’ and Broad Run’s boys’ also shined, the VSIS championships, where Seton won another title, and Good Counsel’s win in the girls’ WMPSSDL championships. Good Counsel’s girls take home a National Catholic title, while Seton School’s Jameson Hill and Holy Cross’s Katie Rogers win Most Valuable Swimmer over the weekend. Hill turned in two automatic All-American times and snapped a record set by Olympian Bobby Hackett that has stood since 1977.
