Montgomery County teams will head to their first Maryland 4A-3A Swimming Championship meet on Saturday, Feb. 25. The county boasts most of the top swimmers in the state, and they have a chance to rewrite the record books this weekend. Check out RFTW’s preview of this year’s state meet inside.

Gonzaga enters this week’s championship meets as one of the hottest teams in the area, coming off wins at the National Catholic and WMPSSDL championship meets. They will be tested this weekend at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championship. The Metros finals are Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center, where the best teams from Montgomery County, WMPSSDL, and DCIAA come together for one of the best collections of high school talent in on the East Coast.

Walter Johnson won the MCPS Division I Championship after a close meet with Churchill’s boys. Churchill girls beat Wootton and Whitman after placing first, third, and fourth in diving to give the Bulldogs a lead going into the swimming events.

Woodson, Yorktown, and Oakton are undefeated on both girls’ and boys’ sides in the Northern Region with one meet to go. Churchill, Wootton, Walter Johnson, and Whitman are battling it out in the MCPS’ top division, and are looking ahead to their first Maryland states appearances.

The high school season kicks back into gear this weekend with rivalry meets in northern Va. and heavyweight bouts in Montgomery County, featuring Madison-Langley, Robinson-Westfield, Walter Johnson-Wootton, and Churchill-B-CC. We’ll see who trained the hardest during the three week holiday break as we enter the 2012 half of the high school season.

The 2011 Tom Dolan Invitational will begin Thursday night at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center, with timed finals events. Over the last decade, the invitational has attracted many of the top club teams from up and down the East Coast, making Tom Dolan one of the most competitive meets in the country. On the eve of the early signing period for NCAA National Letters of Intent, three area high school swimmers — verbally committed to swim for the University of Maryland next year — were contacted by the school’s athletic department and told that Maryland would not be sending out letters to swimming recruits, and they should pursue offers from other institutions.
