Gonzaga wins National Catholics, as the dual meet season comes to a close for Montgomery County High Schools; Virginia district championships kicked off. Results posted for MCPS, Va. AAA Cardinal, Concorde, Liberty, National, & Patriot Districts, as well as National Catholics and Va. AA Dulles District. Also a quick look ahead to the second weekend of championship meets.
Oakton rolled at the 2012 Concorde District championship meet. Janet Hu was sensation for the Cougars as was brother Philip Hu, Conor Murphy, Brian Phillips, and Carter Sharer.
RFTW’s look at this weekend’s Va. AAA Patriot District Championship Swim & Dive Meet, taking place January 27-28 at Cub Run RECenter. Oakton is hoping to get back to championship form this season. Their girls are the defending district champions, while their boys were the runner ups after winning the district, region, and state the year before. Expect Chantilly and Westfield to make things difficult for the Cougars as they put their star studded line ups on the the blocks.

A little snow didn’t slow down northern Virginia’s top teams, as perennial powerhouses concluded their regular season with wins. Maryland schools were forced to cancel their meets due to icy roads from the storm that hit Friday night.

That list of undefeated teams got smaller over the weekend, as we put 2012′s first week of high school swimming behind us.
The high school season kicks back into gear this weekend with rivalry meets in northern Va. and heavyweight bouts in Montgomery County, featuring Madison-Langley, Robinson-Westfield, Walter Johnson-Wootton, and Churchill-B-CC. We’ll see who trained the hardest during the three week holiday break as we enter the 2012 half of the high school season.
Langley’s girls used an all-around team performance and two relay wins to vault back to the top of the Virginia AAA swim championships, while Westfield’s confidence boosted them to the program’s first-ever title. Complete meet results inside (pdf)
Locals Ashley Danner (Lake Braddock) and Meredith Budner (Walter Johnson) open the CAA Championships with titles in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, respectively. Many other locals competed, including former Edison standout David Kiss and former Yorktown star Katie Radloff. VIDEO INCLUDED
Oakton’s boys end Robinson’s seven-year reign as state champions, while the Rams’ girls start their own streak with a second consecutive victory in Virginia Beach. FULL RESULTS AND VIDEO ATTACHED
For the second consecutive year it was Oakton who took home the Virginia AAA Northern Region title, finishing ahead of Fairfax (215), Langley (198) and Robinson (193) with 244 points. FULL RESULTS INSIDE!
Robinson sophomore Cory Bowersox took the Virginia AAA Northern Region diving crown last Thursday, outscoring LSU-bound Annandale senior Sean McKinney in the event. Also, updates on the Northern and Northwest Region swim championships. WITH VIDEO AND FULL RESULTS!
Northern Region girls’ swimming prelims were run as timed finals, and though there is an outside chance a finals may be held next week it is more likely these are the final region results. Also, an update on boys’ swimming and girls’ diving. RESULTS ATTACHED!
Madison’s boys’ and girls’ teams took home titles in the Liberty District, W.T. Woodson’s boys’ and girls’ earned championships in the Patriot and the Oakton boys and Robinson girls won titles in the Concorde in meets around the area. FULL RESULTS INSIDE!!
After months of dual meets, the championship season has finally arrived for Virginia teams as the area district meets open this weekend across the Northern Region. Here is a quick preview of the area Virginia AAA Northern Region district championships.
Whitman coach Geoff Schaefer tinkered with his girls’ lineup this weekend, helping his girls’ team defeat defending Metros champion Churchill, 94-77. The Churchill boys rolled to a 128-43 win. Meanwhile, Robinson and Oakton also split this weekend, with the Oakton boys downing the seven-time state champion Rams, 192-123, and the state champion Robinson girls knocking off Oakton (2-1), 181-134.
