It was an exuberant atmosphere Friday night at Claude Moore RECenter for the 2012 Liberty District Championship meet. Swimmers from all teams were in high spirits and ready to race.

In the end, Langley girls and Madison boys’ again claimed the district title, Madison for the third year in a row. Complete results available here.

Madison boys’ team ran away with the meet after returning nearly every swimmer for Saturday night’s finals.

(photo by Bryan Flaherty/The Washington Post)

“Our boys swam out of their minds tonight. I could not be prouder,” said Madison coach Andrew Foos. “It was a total team effort. I cannot wait to see them in action next week [at AAA Northern Regions].”

Langley’s girls’ team won in similar fashion, using their depth to pull away from the rest of the district. Led by junior Abi Speers, Langley made the most of the many ‘A’ and ‘B’ finals appearances they earned on Friday night.

Speers dazzled all night, winning the 50 free in 24.38 seconds over Thomas Jefferson freshman Carrie Heilbrun (25.14) and South Lakes sophomore Sasha Avilov (25.15), but no race was more thrilling than 400 freestyle, where Speers delivered the performance of the night as the anchor leg for the Saxons.

Madison’s girls were out fast, pacing the race through the first three hundred yards on their way to building a large lead over the rest of the district field. But Langley was holding a trump card in Speers who made up a nearly two body length deficit to turn even with Madison’s Laura Sullivan on the final turn. Speers would pull away in the final length to win 3:39.21 to 3:40.26.

Abi Speers surges ahead off the final turn in the girls' 100 freestyle at the 2012 Liberty District Championship meet (photo by Bryan Flaherty)

It was a much closer race in the 100 freestyle, where Speers was able to get on the wall just ahead of Stone Bridge’s Andi Mack, 52.73 to 52.98. Mack was the winner of the 200 freestyle earlier in the meet in 1:54.58 ahead of fellow freshmen Cassidy Humphrey (Madison) who finished in 1:55.83.

“After losing the senior class we did last year, I think even I underestimated how good this group is,” said Langley coach Ryan Jackson. “These girls are having so much fun this year. They love to race.”

While the rest of the district could not keep pace with either the Warhawk boys or the Saxon girls, there were plenty of impressive individual swims from every team.

Cyrus Hashemi was sensational for Marshall, winning both his individual events in All American Consideration times. In the 200 freestyle, Hashemi led the race from start to finish, with Langley’s Ryan Natal riding his heels. Natal put forth a valiant third lap to try and pull even, but Hashemi proved to be too strong for the Langley senior.

Hashemi finished in 1:40.94, breaking Charlie Putnam’s Liberty District record by over 1.5 seconds. Natal finished in 1:43.02. It would be more of the same for Hashemi who also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.97.

He finished the meet by delivering the knockout punch in the boys’ 400 freestyle relay, after teammates Jacob Freck (junior), Logan Hirka (senior), and Andrew Nyce (senior) had built up a body length lead, finishing in 3:13.75.

Jefferson finished second in 3:17.19 over Madison in 3:18.37. After falling behind early, senior Stephen Seliskar erased the deficit to slip past Madison’s anchor, Howe Wang.

Stephen and his younger brother Andrew Seliskar logged three individual first between them for the Colonials, as well as supplying all the firepower needed to win the 200 freestyle relay.

A. Seliskar started the meet off for the brothers by registering an AAC time in the 200 individual medley (1:52.41). It was a race for second between Nyce and Wang, who finished in 1:57.64 and 1:58.85.

Andrew would later get beaten out in the 100 butterfly by Natal, who posted an ACC time of 50.65. Ben Southern was third with a 52.84 for McLean.

Older brother Stephen concluded his Liberty District career by winning both his individual events. He posted a 21.71 in the 50 freestyle, beating Madison junior Evan Owens (22.24). In the boys’ 100 backstroke, he reached an AAC time of 50.65, just off an Automatic All American designation.

On the girls’ side, Sierra Scoggin impressed for South Lakes, upsetting top-seeded Sidney Owens. Scoggin was out to an early lead in the butterfly and backstroke, and was able to hold on for the win in 2:11.11, despite a furiously charging Owens, who placed second in 2:11.62. Scoggin would later win the girls’ 100 backstroke in 58.59.

Emily Sennett led from the first stroke, winning the 100 butterfly in 57.40 for South Lakes.

McLean’s Southern was the winner in the boys’ 500 freestyle in 4:43.78 over Howe Wang (4:46.81). Wang set the tempo through the first 350 yards, before Southern put on burst of speed to break put distance between himself and Wang.

The girls’ 500 freestyle was equally dramatic. Laura Kellan (Madison) went out fast early, forcing the Langley duo of Mary Elliot and Amy Owens to give chase. Kellan held a three body length lead at the half way point, which she would hold for the remainder of the race, winning in 5:08.83. Elliot finished in 5:16.36; A. Owens in 5:18.53.

Both 100 breaststroke events were fiercely contested. For the boys, Nyce pulled out a win over E. Owens, 1:00.16 to 1:00.50, after the rest of the field faded to compete for third.

MJ Ulrich won the girls’ race for McLean in 1:06.71. She broke away from Jefferson’ Sarah Liu (1:08.64), Langley’s Gretchen Roesel (1:08.75), Madison’s Sami Fletcher (1:08.78), and Fairfax’s Matty Ferguson (1:09.02).

On Friday morning, freshman Brian Neil won the diving event for Fairfax with a score of 324.10. His teammate junior Alex Parker took second with a 296.75, just ahead of South Lakes Jake Andrich with a 295.50.

Katherine Van Winkle earned top marks in girls’ diving, scoring 416.90 points, to win big over second-place finisher Emily Saitta (Jefferson) who scored 381.90. Alyssa Worsham was third with 337.35.

“We love swimming in this district. Everyone knows everyone. A lot of the swimmers swim together year-round and over the summer. It is just such a great atmosphere to compete in,” added coach Jackson.

The congenial atmosphere was evident as the coaches joked with each other on deck and congratulated each other after each great swim. Next week will be a different scene, as the often overlooked Liberty District will go up against the Northern Regions best at the AAA Northern Region Championship meet, at Oak Marr RECenter. They await results from the other three districts also taking place tonight.

RFTW's look at this weekend's Va. AAA Liberty District Championship Swim & Dive Meet, taking place January 26-28 at Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale. Will Madison's boys and Langley's girls be able to repeat as district champions? Or will another team step up this year and steal the crown? It's a toss up between the top teams, but we know freshmen swimmers will be the key this year in the Liberty District.

Young talent has been the key this year in the Liberty District, and it will be no different this Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, Jan. 26-28, at the district championship meet, featuring a star-studded cast at Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale.

The reigning state champion Langley girls are expected to defend their district title, while the boys’ meet promises to be a thriller. Jefferson and Madison seem to be the favorites, but Langley could make things interesting if the Saxons can steal some points in the relays.

The Saxon girls are led by junior Abi Speers. She was last year’s runner-up in the 50 freestyle at the Va. AAA championship meet and third in the 100 freestyle. She is seeded first in the 50 free with a 23.98 and second in the 100 free (53.16), behind freshman star Andi Mack (Stone Bridge), seeded with a 53.10. Mack is the top seed in the 200 freestyle (1:56.00) as well.

Liberty District teams were inundated with freshmen talent this year. Along with Mack, Sydney Owens and Cassidy Humphrey have shined for Madison this season, as has Carrie Heilbrun for Jefferson and Natalie Obando for South Lakes.

Owens is the top seed in the 200 IM (2:13.77). She’ll be challenged by senior Katie Bennett (Jefferson), seeded a half-second back with a 2:14.22.

Humphrey, Heilbrun, and South Lakes senior Emily Sennett will jockey for first in the 100 butterfly. Sennett holds first position in 59.60, quickly followed by Humphrey (1:00.20) and Heilbrun (1:00.86). Sennett is also seeded third in the 100 freestyle (54.74).

Her South Lakes teammate, Obando, is favored to win the 100 backstroke (59.88), although with a good race, the second-seeded Bennett (1:01.19) could move up and steal the event for Jefferson.

Obando also has a chance to move up from her seventh seed in the 200 freestyle (2:03.48), but she will have to go through fellow freshmen Humphrey, seeded fourth (2:00.65), and Langley’s Amy Owens, seeded fifth (2:01.12).

The race of the night on the girls’ side may come in the 500 freestyle. The field is all bunched up at the top, with Laura Kellan (Madison), Maria McGuire (McLean), Owens, and Laura Sullivan (Madison) all seeded within .6 seconds of each other. Fifth-seeded Mary Elliott (Langley) is just 2.5 seconds outside of first place.

Top-seeded Kellan is listed with a 5:20.20, but any one of these girls has the ability to move up in the mid-distance event. Expect Kellan to use her seed to maintain control in the end.

Also wide open is the girls’ 100 breaststroke, which will be a fight between Fairfax’s Matty Ferguson (1:09.15), McLean’s MJ Ulrich (1:09.37), Jefferson’s Sarah Liu (1:09.40), and Langley’s Gretchen Roesel (1:09.56).

Langley is the top seed in both freestyle relays, and could move up from third to win the medley relay as well. Their depth at the top should propel them to win the district again this year, leaving Jefferson, McLean, and Madison fighting each other for third.

The boys’ meet will be much closer, with Madison, Jefferson, and Langley contending for the title. Also look for Marshall’s talented boys to spoil one of the top teams chances by stealing points at finals.

Jefferson’s boys’ team is much improved this year with the addition of freshmen Andrew Seliskar and Luke Thorsell. But the more important pair for the Colonials are the one-two punch of brothers Andrew and Stephen Seliskar. Andrew is the top seed in the 200 IM (1:55.02) and 100 butterfly (51.06).

His brother Stephen, a senior, is the top seed in the 100 backstroke (51.64), and will battle top-seeded Evan Owens (Madison), Sydney Owens’s older brother, in the 50 freestyle, seeded 22.07 and 21.85, respectively. Owens is also the top seed in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.46).

“The real wild card is diving; swimming is going to be very close,” Madison Coach Andrew Foos said.

Langley’s top-gun, Ryan Natal, holds the top seed in the boys’ 200 freestyle with a 1:42.06, but watch out for Marshall’s Cyrus Hashemi. He may be seeded with a 1:46.32, but has gone much faster this year outside of high school. Hashemi has plenty of speed, and he is favored to win the 100 freestyle, seeded with a 47.00. Natal will meet A. Seliskar in the 100 butterfly, seeded second with a 51.51.

If Madison wants to repeat as district champions, Howe Wang, along with teammate Owens, must have a big meet for the Warhawks. Wang is the top seed in the 500 freestyle (4:42.08), but will have to stave off junior Ben Southern (McLean) seeded with a 4:43.61. Wang also holds the third position in the 200 IM, sandwiched between second-seed Andrew Nyce (Marshall) and third-seed, Thorsell, listed at 1:57.52 and 2:01.50.

“Taking all three relays [on the boys' side] would be big,” Jefferson Coach Ian Handerhan said. “We need our 10th through 12th place swimmers to make it back in the top heat.”

Last place in the “A” final is guaranteed 11 points, whereas first in the “B” final drops off to nine points; seven for second.

“We have a host of guys who we will have to wait and see where they end up [after Friday],” Foos said.

Those Friday night swims will make as much of a difference for Madison and Jefferson as diving and relays.

Other swimmers to watch in the boys’ meet are South Lakes junior Anthony Barbee, seeded third in the 200 freestyle (1:48.53) and 100 freestyle (49.65). He’ll contend with Reese Frerichs (Jefferson) and Grayson Smith (Madison), who will both be gunning for him in the 100 freestyle. Also, McLean freshman Gerry Wan (1:01.36) will challenge Nyce (1:01.40) in the 100 breaststroke, behind Owens.

“This meet is swum on Friday for us, just like everyone else, you can’t score points unless you make it to finals,” added Marshall Coach Ann Jopke.

For the second consecutive year it was the Oakton boys who took home the Virginia AAA Northern Region title, finishing ahead of Fairfax (215), Langley (198) and Robinson (193) with 244 points.

It was a surprising finish for Robinson, which has won seven consecutive state titles, but indicated the increased competition throughout the region and especially in the Liberty District.

Snow on Saturday forced teams to prepare for district championships earlier than anticipated, as three of the four districts in the Northern Region held timed finals and relays on Friday night around the area.

Madison’s boys’ and girls’ teams took home titles in the Liberty District, W.T. Woodson’s boys’ and girls’ earned championships in the Patriot and the Oakton’s boys and Robinson’s girls won titles in the Concorde.

The National District finals will be held tonight at Washington-Lee Pool.

It was a weekend dominated by youth, as several younger swimmers turned in breakout performances in the meets. A freshman boy and sophomore girl won a title and two sophomore girls won two events in the Concorde, a freshman girl and sophomore boy took a title and a sophomore girl won two in the Patriot and three freshmen girls, a sophomore boy and sophomore girl won in the Liberty.

The Oakton boys’ win ended one of Robinson’s dominant streaks, as the Rams had taken home 12 straight district titles before the Cougars halted things this weekend. Oakton finished with 492 points to Robinson‘s 404, with Herndon taking third at 334.
