Oakton is hoping to get back to championship form this season. Wednesday, January 25th, 2012Yorktown girls’ team (7-0) are again undefeated this season, having not lost a regular season or district championship meet in over a decade. On the boys’ side, an undefeated Washington-Lee boys’ team are the reigning champions and are not ready to relinquish their crown. Events begin each night at 5:30 p.m. at the brand-new Yorktown Pool in Arlington. Swimming preliminaries will be on Friday, Jan. 27, with finals the next night, Jan. 28. Battlefield’s seniors impress in girls’ win over Patriot; boys stumble despite dominant performances by stars
Saturday, January 21st, 2012In the Prince William County showdown, the Bobcat girls’ team (5-0) flexed their muscles against the young Patriot girls (4-1), winning 180-106, while the Battlefield boys (4-1) came up short, despite winning the majority of the night’s events, losing a close one to the Pioneers (5-0), 146-140.

At the WMPSSDL championships, Sidwell Friends junior Olivia Grinker won her third straight diving title while Landon’s Jordan Gear won the boys’ title.

Va. Beach pool is retooled ahead of states
Friday, February 19th, 2010The swimmers who will compete Saturday in the Virginia AAA state championship were not yet in middle school the last time the season-ending meet was held at the Princess Anne Recreation Center in Virginia Beach. But the story of that pool — which sparked controversy when it was found to be less than a half-inch short of 25 meters at the 2003 championships, thus nullifying several national records — is well known by many of the athletes.The pool has since undergone construction to meet competition standards. Yet while the lanes this year are a full 25 meters, there’s another type of measurement that will affect the athletes from Northern Virginia.

Monday, December 14th, 2009Whitman coach Geoff Schaefer tinkered with his girls’ lineup this weekend, helping his girls’ team defeat defending Metros champion Churchill, 94-77. The Churchill boys rolled to a 128-43 win. Meanwhile, Robinson and Oakton also split this weekend, with the Oakton boys downing the seven-time state champion Rams, 192-123, and the state champion Robinson girls knocking off Oakton (2-1), 181-134.

Friday, December 11th, 2009Last season, Oakton celebrated during the Northern Region championships after taking powerhouse Robinson down for the boys’ title. A week later, however, Robinson got the last laugh, winning a seventh consecutive boys’ state championship, and taking home the girls’ title, too. Friday at 6:30 p.m., the two rivals will meet at Cub Run in a meet that has both teams excited for what they said is the most important meet of the dual season.
