The Va. AAA State Swimming & Diving Championship Meet kicks off on Friday, Feb. 17. Finals on Saturday. Who will take home the team title? What records could fall? Here are 5 storylines to follow at this year's championship meet.

The Northern Region will play host to some of the best swimmers from across the state as the Virginia AAA swimming & diving championships runs Friday & Saturday at George Mason University’s Jim McKay Natatorium in what will be another exciting weekend for swimming in this area.

All swimming prelims will be held on Friday, beginning at 4 p.m. Finals will be on Saturday, again starting at 4 p.m. Diving will take place on Saturday morning. Boys at 9 a.m.; girls at noon. Price of admission is $10.00 per person/per session.

Complete psych sheet

Additional information from VHSL on the 2012 State Championship Meet

Every race should be a thrilling showdown, with many local names showing up Saturday night at finals. Here are five storylines to watch at this year’s state meet:

1. For the first time in a decade, a team from outside of the Northern Region could be crowned state champions.

Northern Region teams have not lost the girls’ state swimming meet since 1998, and the boys’ have shown themselves to be the girls’ equals, winning 10 straight boys’ titles. That probably will not change this year on the girls’ side. Expect Oakton to be out ahead, followed by West Potomac, and Langley.

But the boys’ meet could be a different story. Cox High School (Virginia Beach) brings one of their strongest state teams ever, led by seniors Wesley Francis and Ben Hansen, along with sophomores Nate Dacruz and Austin Temple. They have hope for numerous top five finishes and wins in at least two relays that could propel them past the strong Northern Region squads.

The Falcons will have to go through a deep Oakton team, eager to reclaim another state title, Woodson‘s powerhouse dive squad, and a brothers Seliskar-led Thomas Jefferson, with their eye on multiple individual and relay state titles.

2. Whoever said swimming is not a team sport was never on a meet clinching relay team.

The state championship this year may very well be decided in the relays. Not only are relays worth double the points, but they also provide a momentum boost for the individual swimmers on and off the relay. The big dropoff between first-place points (40) and second (34) is going to be significant for Cox, who needs that six-point advantage if it hopes to upset Oakton.

Cox is the top seed in the 200-yard freestyle and 200 medley relays. The Falcons are quickly followed by Jefferson and West Springfield. The combined difference between Jefferson and Cox’s two relays is a mere .06 seconds. If either Jefferson or West Springfield can knock Cox off the top spot, it will be a big boost for Oakton, who will not vie for first in either event.

In the 400 freestyle relay, it will be nearly impossible for anyone to catch the Oakton team of Carter Sharer, Conor Murphy, Brian Phillips, and Philip Hu, seeded way out in front with a 3 minutes 11 seconds, but the race for second will be close, between Cox, Chantilly, Marshall, South County, and Woodson, all who feature a superstar anchor ready to fight for those final points.

Just like the team competition, the girls’ relays should be dominated by Northern Region teams. Oakton, West Potomac, and Langley will contend for the top points in each, but do not rule out Battlefield‘s girls’ 200 medley relay, fresh off winning the Northwest title in the event.

Natalie Martin brings Battlefield into the lead on the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay. Martin and teammates Nina Tremols, Holly Criscuolo and Sofia Revilak won the relay in 1:48.67, an All American consideration time. (Photo by Marianne Thiede)

Battlefield has not had the opportunity to race anyone as fast as the teams from West Potomac, Woodson, and Oakton yet this season. Battlefield seniors Natalie Martin and Holly Criscuolo will pair up with Nina Tremols and Sofia Revilak to take on the Northern Region’s best. But it is hard to imagine anyone catching the speedy team of Reanna Dona, Maxine Clifford, Sara Bertram, and Hellen Moffitt from West Potomac, who set the Northern Region record two weeks back, and who will be vying for the state record this Saturday.

3.Records will tumble. The question is, how many?

The Virginia AAA state championship meet has been held in a short course meters pool the last two years, meaning no one has had an opportunity to break a traditional state yards records in quite some time. Besides the girls’ 200 medley relay record, there are a number of individual records that could go down this year.

Cyrus Hashemi (Marshall) in the boys’ 200 and 100 freestyle. Hashemi is just .21 behind the record of 1:39.88 in the 200 freestyle, and .25 off the 100 freestyle record of 45.56. Check out this video of Hashemi talking about his swimming success and his decision to swim for UNC-Wilmington next year:

Andrew Seliskar (Jefferson) in the boys’ 200 individual medley. A. Seliskar could shatter the record by more than 1.5 seconds. The record of 1:51.72,, held by David Kiss – currently at George Mason University, – is one of the fastest records in the state. It was previously held by Austrian Olympic silver medalist Markus Rogan (Mount Vernon High School) and was untouched for nine years. Northern Region runner-up Brandon Fiala will most likely go under the record as well, behind A. Seliskar.

Stephen Seliskar (Jefferson) in the boys’ 100 backstroke. Andrew’s older brother Stephen (senior) will have a shot at breaking Rogan’s remaining state record in the 100 backstroke (50.20). He went a 49.97 in prelims at the Northern Region championship meet two weeks ago, and is certainly hoping to be able to match that mark this weekend.

Bo Ilgenfritz (Woodson) in the boys’ 100 breaststroke. While no one is going to challenge Chuck Katis’s (Harvard) Northern Region record of 55.61 anytime soon, the state record is comparatively languid at 57.15, and within reach of the Woodson senior (57.20).

Abi Speers (Langley) in the girls’ 50 freestyle. Speers seems to get a little bit faster off the blocks each week. Her seed time (23.32) is already under Olympic hopeful Amanda Kendall‘s 2009 record of 23.40, but the Langley junior will push herself to see how much further she can lower that mark, especially with the impressive group of underclassmen in the lanes surrounding her.

Janet Hu (Oakton) in the girls’ 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Hu is on an impressive run, setting regional records in the 100 freestyle (49.52) and 100 backstroke (53.76), while leading Oakton’s girls to team titles at districts and regionals.

Oakton's Janet Hu jumps out of the starting block on her way to a record-setting victory in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.76 in the Virginia Northern Region swim meet. (Photo by Preston Keres/For The Washington Post)

This week, she has her sights on two of the fastest girls’ state records – the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. She is seeded .34 off the 100 butterfly record held by Suzanne Schwee (University of Alabama) with a time of 55.12, and is well under U-Va. swimmer Meredith Cavalier’s record in the 100 backstroke of 54.85. She could round off her night by breaking the girls’ 400 freestyle relay record of 3:30.60, held by an Ashley Danner (GMU) anchored Lake Braddock team. Oakton is currently seeded 3:30.96.

4. Speed suits will make a difference this weekend.

How many finalists will be sporting the newest look by the sports premier technical outfitters? After the 2010 ban on technical suits, FINA approved tags were spotted on suits everywhere at the Washington Metro and Northern Region championship meets, and TYR, Arena, Nike, and Speedo championship level suits will most certainly be in abundance at Saturday night’s finals.

How many swimmers were able to get their hands on the newest Fastskin3 by Speedo for this weekend’s meet, which claims a 5.2% reduction in full body drag; 5.7% when paired with the goggle and cap system? At $395 for the male jammer and $595 for the female kneeskin, the suits ought to swim for you, but a 5.7% difference could be enough to propel a lower seeded swimmer to a championship title. These suits are approved by the NFHS, USA Swimming, and FINA, but that does not mean we are not headed toward possibly another suit controversy like in 2000 and 2008.

5. Five Olympic Trials qualifiers will compete this weekend, all on the girls’ side.

A number of local swimmers will be competing for a coveted spot on the US Olympic Team in June at the U.S. Olympic Trials, in Omaha.

Jenna Van Camp (Herndon High School), Ali Stephens-Pickeral (George Washington High School), and Kayla Brumbaum (Riverbend High School) are all Trials qualifiers in the 100 breaststroke, and will meet this weekend in that event on Saturday. Van Camp is the top seed with a blistering 1:02.49. Stephens-Pickeral is right behind in 1:03:44, followed by Brumbaum in 1:04.38.

In the 100 backstroke, Hellen Moffitt and Janet Hu will square off. Moffitt achieved her first Trials cut last summer in the 100 backstroke. Hu has not reached her cut in backstroke, but currently has cuts in three other events. Hu could add more in March at one of the long course championship club meets.

Moffitt and Hu will meet again in the 400 freestyle relay. At the Northern Region meet, Hu was too much for Moffitt in both events. She shattered the region record in the backstroke event just a few events before she delivered one of the most sensational swims of the night, as the anchor of the 400 freestyle relay. She overcame a sizable deficit to win the event for Oakton, splitting 48.5 in the final leg.

Records were broken Saturday night at the 2012 AAA Patriot District Championship meet. Woodson boys' and girls' impressed as they won the district title.

Led by the strength of its upper class, Woodson girls’ (7-0) rebounded from a third place finish last year, to win the 2012 AAA Patriot District Championship. They beat West Springfield 414 to 353.

The Cavalier boys’ team (7-0) could not be slowed down again this year, winning the district championship for the third straight year. They were chased by West Springfield all night, but the experienced group of senior boys for Woodson would not be denied in a 525 to 476 win. Lake Braddock finished third in both meets.

Woodson got off to a blazing start with a win in diving from Ben Schiesl. Woodson divers would take first, third, fourth, and seventh on Friday morning, its second highest scoring event behind boys’ 100 breaststroke.

Bo Ilgenfritz stood out for the Cavaliers, winning both the 200 IM (1:59.43) and 100 breaststroke (58.74). Ilgenfritz broke the district record in the 100 breaststroke, set in 2003 by Andy Pelenberg (Annandale). He beat senior teammate Nathan Pease, who was over a second ahead of third, with a time of 1:00.01. Cory Hansen and Reid Penzler would complete the sweep for Woodson in 1:01.32 and 1:01.42.

Ilgenfritz fueled the second place 200 medley relay (1:38.58) and the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:18.38). They lost to West Springfield’s 200 medley relay (1:37.15), who broke the Patriot District record set by Woodson in 2010. The team of Sean Mayer, William Bryan, Colin Stephenson, and Jacob Anderson combined for the record.

South County‘s Evin Rude came up big for the Stallions in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. He cruised in the longer event to an easy win in 4:42.96, ahead of Woodson’s Colin Chartier (5:04.76). The 200 freestyle was a much closer race with West Springfield’s Mayer. But Rude was too much for Mayer in the end, winning 1:44.17 to 1:45.42.

Rude’s teammate Michael Herrmann was also a double winner, earning individual titles in the 100 butterfly (51.72) and 100 backstroke (51.96). He got an impressive win in the butterfly early in the meet over Stephenson (52.80), Jesse Kane (53.41), Cole McGarry (53.75), and Eric Chestnut (53.87), all with strong swims.

Herrmann was even better in the backstroke, crushing the field with a 51.96. Mayer was second for the second time that night in 54.55. He was followed by Woodson’s Alex Saffran (55.72) and James Chung (55.99).

Despite Ilgenfritz being their lone winner, Woodson’s boys kept getting on the wall in the top five all night.

The girls’ meet was won in similar fashion, capitalizing on the depth that has propelled them all season.

Woodson finished first in the girls’ 200 freestyle relay (1:40.98), second in the 200 medley relay (1:50.10), and third in 400 freestyle relay (3:42.22). Freshmen Lead Rogers and Rachel Ward were crucial ingredients in those relays, as was junior Morgan Bui and senior Rachel Rogers.

Leah Rogers was the only individual winner for the Cavalier ladies. She gutted out a tough win in the 100 butterfly (58.39), just ahead of Sara Bertram (58.69), Lauren Yi (58.95), and Jordan Parry (58.96).

Brooke Malone was one of only two double winners on the girls’ side of the meet. The South County sophomore earned an impressive win in a hotly contested girls’ 200 individual medley with a winning time of 2:11.33. She beat out West Potomac‘s Bertram (2:11.58), L. Rogers (2:12.14), and TC Williams Abigail Cox (2:12.43).

Malone also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.51, beating Sophie Chase (Lake Braddock) and Rachel Rogers (Woodson), who finished in 1:07.68 and 1:08.40.

The other big winner on the girls side was Reanna Dona, senior at West Potomac, who finished her Patriot District career as the winner in the 50 freestyle (24.43) and 100 backstroke (57.95), the latter a new district record.

In the girls’ 200 freestyle, Robyn Dryer beat out West Potomac’s Hellen Moffitt and Lake Braddock’s Alyssa McGarry. Dryer finished in 1:55.63, pulling away from Moffitt (1:56.44) and A. McGarry (1:56.91) for the win.

Dryer and Moffitt would meet again in the 100 freestyle. This time Moffitt came out on top, winning in 53.89. She combined with teammate Maxine Clifford (54.01) to go 1-2 in the event. Robyn fell to third with a time of 54.08. TC Williams’ Gloriya Mavrova finished fourth in 54.62. Ward was fifth in 55.06.

Dona, Clifford, Bertram, and Moffitt got together to break the 200 medley relay record in a new time of 1:47.02, shattering the previous record of 1:50.50, set in 2008 by Lake Braddock. The same relay team would later win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:37.51.

In one of the few non-contests of the night, A. McGarry swam to a commanding lead in the 500 freestyle, winning by 11 seconds, with a time of 5:16.76, over Colleen Cox (TC Williams), who finished second in 5:27.96.

It will be a different game for the Cavaliers next week when they meet the winners from the Concorde, Liberty, and National Districts.

Defending girls’ regional and state champs Langley got an impressive win Saturday night, making a case for why they are still the team to beat, as did perennial challengers Yorktown and Oakton.

The boys’ regional meet will be a horse race between Woodson, Madison, and Oakton, who will stack up their super stars side by side next weekend at Oakmarr RECenter.

The AAA Northern Region championship meet gets started on Tuesday, Jan. 31, with girls’ diving. Boys’ diving will follow the next night, Feb. 1. Swimming relims this year will be split up, with the girls on Thursday and the boys on Friday. Finals will take place Saturday night with two heats in each event.

As we head into the first weekend of championship meets, there is one team on every body’s lips in northern Virginia. That juggernaut is Woodson, who have returned one of the best classes of seniors in the area, and were bolstered by and influx of talented freshmen on both girls’ and boys’ sides.

The Cavalier boys’ team should have no problem repeating as Patriot District champions this weekend, Jan. 26-28, at Lee District RECenter, on their way to showdown with powerhouses Cox, Oakton, and Osbourn Park at the Va. AAA state championship meet, Feb. 17-18, at George Mason University, in Fairfax.

(photo by Bryan Flaherty/The Washington Post)

Woodson’s girl’s team will have a slightly tougher time winning this year’s Patriot District crown, with a strong West Springfield squad looking for payback after the Cavaliers ended their perfect season early this month. Also in the mix will be a hungry Lake Braddock and the reigning girls’ district champion, South County Stallions.

“No one saw South County’s girls coming out and swimming as well as they did last year” said Lake Braddock coach Scott Darwin. “It is going to be one of the most competitive women’s meets I can ever remember. Woodson, West Springfield, West Potomac, South County, and Lake Braddock all have at least one swimmer seeded first, and no school has more than two number-one seeds.”

Woodson, West Potomac, and West Springfield each have a relay seeded first, but every relay is up for grabs, and will be largely determined by where teams decide to stack their stars.

The Cavaliers will be sure to start the championship meet off on the right foot, with help from senior diver Samantha Eldridge, who is slotted number one going into Thursday’s dive events.

Once Friday night’s swimming prelims begin, the Patriot District talent will be on full display. Every team has swimmers who can step up and score big points in every race. Where those other swimmers place on Saturday night will play a major role in the outcome between Woodson and West Springfield.

If Woodson wants to hold off the Spartan ladies, they’ll need big races from freshman Leah Rogers and her sister, senior Rachel Rogers. Both will swim the 200 IM for the Cavaliers. Leah is seeded fourth with a time of 2:13.55, behind South County’s Brooke Malone (2:12.27), TC Williams’ Abigail Cox (2:13.04),and West Potomac’s Sara Bertram (2:13.07). Rachel is seeded sixth (2:16.78), behind MacKenzie Walsh (2:16.31) from South County.

L. Rogers over swim will come in the 100 butterfly (58.70) where she is slated first. Her sister Rachel is the third-seed in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.09), behind state qualifiers Malone (1:07.46) and Lake Braddock’s Sophie Chase (1:07.72).

Rachel Ward, the other half of Woodson’s sensational freshman duo, is seeded fifth in the 100 freestyle (56.31) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (25.74). But she’ll have a tough time moving up against the Patriot District’s best sprinters.

Freshman Robyn Dryer (West Springfield) has dominated all season, and leads the district in the 100 freestyle (53.95) and 200 freestyle (1:57.95). Along with Ward, she’ll face West Potomac’s Hellen Moffitt in the 100 freestyle. Moffitt has the top-end speed to beat Dryer in the 100 freestyle, where she is currently seeded eighth (57.49).

In the 200 freestyle, expect Moffitt to be a lot quicker than her 1:57.95 seed time. The Wolverine’s junior is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100 backstroke. Alyssa McGarry (Lake Braddock) is also a threat, despite her 2:01.62. McGarry is the breakaway favorite 500 freestyle (5:15.65) as well, seeded nearly 20 seconds ahead of West Springfield’s Mady Sieracki (5:34.90) and Kimberly Kellogg (3:38.90).

Moffitt’s All-Met teammate Reanna Dona leads the way in the 100 backstroke with a 1:00.83. She’s quickly followed by junior Morgan Bui (1:00.93) from Woodson.

“West Springfield has more depth at the top than we do,” said Woodson coach Brian Dufour. “Our team has to swim well on Friday night and get to those ‘A’ finals. The meet will close.”

The meet may not be so close on the boys’ side, where Woodson is expected to run away with the meet. West Springfield is solidly in second place, with the battle for third taking place between South County, Annandale, and Lake Braddock.

“It will be interesting to see how the district turns out this year with the competitiveness from first through fifth. it will be the first time in two years the meet will be a two day meet. It has been shortened for weather the last two years,” added Lake Braddock coach Scott Darwin.

Woodson is stacked in diving, holding the top two spots in the district, as well as the fourth and sixth seeds. Ben Schiesl and Eric Pavord lead the way, aided by Matt Hubbard and Declan Casey. Hubbard is the lone sophomore in this dominant group of freshmen boys.

On the swimming side, Woodson showcases its experience with a premier group of seniors, led by Bo Ilgenfritz, Nathan Pease, Alex Saffran, Colin Chartier, Eric Chestnut, and Dean Furst. They’ve led Woodson to a first seed in the 400 freestyle relay, and second seeds in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay, each behind West Springfield’s boys. They hope to lead the Cavaliers to their third consecutive boys’ Patriot District Championship, with sites on regional and states titles as well.

Individually, they will get plenty of competition from the rest of the district.

Ilgenfritz is the top seed in two events. In the 100 breaststroke, his only challenge comes from teammate Pease, seeded 59.46 and 1:01.29, respectively. He’ll have a much tighter race in the 200 IM where he is seed with a 2:02.31, just in front of Lake Braddock freshman Cole McGarry (2:03.96) and Woodson teammate Saffran (2:04.12).

McGarry will be chasing the Cavaliers all night. He is seeded third with a 54.06, behind junior star Jesse Kane in the 100 butterfly, seeded second with a 53.95, and senior Michael Herrmann (South County), seeded first with a 52.14. Chestnut follows in fourth (54.13), Colin Stephenson (54.26) and Jake Dickens (54.74) in fifth and sixth for the Spartans, with Michael Valceanu (West Potomac) seeded seventh, but certainly not out of the race, with a 55.31.

Herrmann’s South County teammate Evin Rude leads the way in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.89. He is followed by West Springfield’s Sean Mayer in 1:48.98 and Chartier in 1:50.74, in what should be a fast ‘A’ final. Rude is also the heavy favorite in the 500 freestyle, where he is the top seed by nearly 20 seconds, with a 4:50.87. Chartier is in second with a 5:10.58.

West Springfield shows off the depth of its sprinters in the 50 freestyle, seeded one, two. Jacob Anderson leads the way with a 21.77, followed by Matthew Garstka and Woodson’s Kane tied for the second with a 22.66.

Garstka will battle Woodson sophomore James Chung in the 100 freestyle. Garstka earned the top seed with a 49.40, followed by Chung with a 50.27, Garstka’s teammates Anderson (50.47) and Michael Speer (50.94), South County’s Alex Martin (51.00), and Woodson’s Furst (51.12) in a race that can be won or lost by a bad start or turn.

Herrmann, Mayer, and Saffran are spaced out in the 100 backstroke. Herrmann leads the way with a 52.88; Mayer in second with a 54.08; Saffran in third with a 56.33. While Herrmann might be too fast to catch, Mayer and Saffran should not overlook Annandale’s Daniel Jessen, just off the back with a 57.87. Saffran’s teammate Chung rounds out the top five with a 58.38.

The talented group of boys Woodson and West Springfield bring to the meet will make it exceedingly difficult for South County, Annandale, and Lake Braddock to get their boys into final heats, making it even more crucial for their super stars to step up and score big points to balance their ‘B’ finalists.

If South County can steal a relay from either Woodson or West Springfield, they could seal a third place finish ahead of Annandale and Lake Braddock. Expect a close results regardless of the order.

We’re approaching the beginning of the championship season, and several teams are looking strong going into the final meets of the dual meet season. But an undefeated season won’t mean much to these teams if they can’t win their district or divisional championship title.

Woodson, Yorktown, and Oakton are undefeated on both girls’ and boys’ sides in the Northern Region with one meet to go. Churchill, Wootton, Walter Johnson, and Whitman are battling it out in the MCPS’ top division, and are looking ahead to their first Maryland states appearances.

Featured Meet of the Week: Woodson tops West Springfield to advance to 6-0

Woodson left 6-0, and with a clear path to the Patriot District championship. [Click here to keep reading]

Clarksburg boys keep three-year winning streak alive; Watkins Mill girls win

Clarksburg boy’s haven’t lost a meet since the 2008-2009 season, but with a season ending injury to the Coyotes’ star junior, Andrew Qian, it looked like Watkins Mill had a shot to steal the win this week.

But despite three disqualifications, Clarksburg managed to beat the Wolverines boys by one point, 85-84. Watkins Mill’s girls’ team won 94-73.

Key swims came from Michael Le who won the 100 breaststroke and Josh Kiehl in the 50 freestyle. Jared White also performed well, winning both the 200 and 500 freestyle events for Clarksburg.

It was a team effort for the Watkins Mill girls’ team, who picked up the majority of the seconds, thirds, and fourths. Kelly Lewis was the only double winner for the Wolverine ladies, winning the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events.

Gould won the 200 IM for the Vikings in 2:13.72.

Churchill handles division one newcomer Blair

*excerpts taken from Churchill team page

On Saturday, the Churchill Bulldogs faced off against division one newcomer, Blair Blazers. For the fourth meet in a row, the boys started the meet by taking first and second in the opening 200 medley relay.

In the first individual event, the 200 freestyle, Joey Bieda, Chris Wysocki and Colin Asbury swept. The boys’ team (4-0) were well on their way to defeating the Blazers 122.5 to 48.5. Harrison Gu (200 IM) and Austin Cole (50 free) won the remaining events of the first half. Tim Faerber returned this week to win diving.

The break did not slow down the swimmers. Eric Eig, Andy Rosenthal and Eric Shiang kept the wins coming by sweeping the 100 butterfly. Then, Cole (100 free) and Gu (100 breast) won their second events of the meet. In the end, the boys won eight out of the nine individual events.

Jack Foster was the lone winner for the Blazers. He took first in the 500 freestyle, and a close second in the 200 IM.

Like last week, the Bulldogs’ “A” relay faced a battle in the 400 freestyle relay, and again, Cole anchored the relay to guarantee victory. This week he was joined by Asbury, Bieda and Wysocki. They were challenged by the Bulldogs “B” relay of Eig, Rosenthal, Steve Ge and Odin Soevik, who came in second.

The girls have not lost a race since December 17, 2011, and nothing would change this week. Against the Blazers, the girls (3-1) won every single individual and relay race on their way to a 127-44 victory.

Shannon Ridge, Elizabeth Gelbaugh, Elaina Gu and Michelle Illig won the opening 200 medley relay.

Natalya Ares followed the relay victory by winning the 200 free. She would also win the 100 butterfly. The girls then swept the next five events.

Gu was a double winner in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, along with Alicia Tiberino, who won the 50 and 100 freestyle events.

In the last individual event, the girls swept the 100 breaststroke for their sixth sweep of the meet.

Battlefield beats Osbourn, remains undefeated

Battlefield’s girls didn’t lose an event in the lopsided, 196-90 win over Osbourn. The boys’ team handled Osbourn, 181-108, to remain undefeated in the Cedar Run District.

West Springfield picked up its first loss of the season against a dominant Woodson team that is stacked from top to bottom. The Cavaliers should finish the season 7-0 next week against Lake Braddock before setting their sites on district, regional, and state titles.

In a clash between two of the region’s top-tier teams, Woodson and West Springfield both entered the district meet with 5-0 records. Woodson left 6-0, and with a clear path to the Patriot District championship, where they have a shot at another undefeated season and district title.

The Cavaliers took both sides of the meet, winning a close one on the boys’ side, 164-151, and a decisive 183.5-131.5 on the girls’.

(photo by Bryan Flaherty/The Washington Post)

Woodson’s depth proved to be too much to overcome for the Spartans, who, nonetheless, displayed impressive star-power in the loss.

The boys’ meet went back and forth before Woodson was able to break away with a one, two victory in the 100 breaststroke, won by Nathan Pease.

The difference in the meet was Woodson’s divers. Ben Schiesl, Eric Pavord, and Matt Hubbard were able to get the first through third sweep to give the swimmers a much-needed cushion.

The Spartan boys went down fighting, though, with a win in the 200 freestyle relay, along with big swims out of Matt Garstka, Jake Anderson, and Colin Stephenson, each with individual wins.

The meet ended with an exciting race between two fast 400 freestyle relay teams. Woodson built a narrow lead for their anchor, James Chung, during the first three legs, but Sean Mayer delivered in the final leg for West Springfield.

Mayer stayed under just long enough off the final turn to pull even with Chung, before taking the race in the final yards in one of the most exciting races of the night.

In the girls’ meet, Woodson was able to take an early lead against a talented Spartan ladies team, thanks to the depth and talent of their freshmen class.

(photo by Bryan Flaherty/The Washington Post)

Freshmen girls Leah Rogers and Rachel Ward were double winners for Woodson. Rogers took the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, while Ward held off West Springfield’s best in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

But the meet wasn’t all Woodson. Robin Dryer was sensational for the Spartans, winning the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle, before delivering the key leg as the anchor of the 400 freestyle relay.

Rogers crushed the Spartans lead-off leg, to build a huge lead for Woodson. But West Springfield’s ladies did not give up, inching up with each lap before pulling even going into the final exchange. Dryer showed a burst of speed to pull away from Woodson’s anchor, and couldn’t be caught.

West Springfield’s relay won in state qualifying time.

West Springfield continues their dual meet season next week against South County. Woodson will meet Lake Braddock next week to end their season. Both will meet again at the Patriot District championship, beginning Thursday, Jan. 26, with girls’ diving.

Friday night will feature W.T. Woodson (5-0, 5-0) versus West Springfield (5-0, 5-0) in a matchup between undefeated teams.

It’s always exciting when two undefeated teams meet late in the season. And that is what we have as W.T. Woodson‘s boys’ and girls’ teams prepare to meet West Springfield this Friday, 6:00 p.m., at Lee District RECenter.

This is a familiar situation for the Cavaliers, whose boys have gone undefeated the last two seasons, but West Springfield will match Woodson in just about every event this year. On their way to 5-0, both teams have blown away their competition so far this season.

“This will be an exciting meet to watch,” said the Spartans’ first-year head coach, Kristy Kellogg. “Woodson has a lot of depth and they’ll be hard to beat.”

Woodson has 28 freshmen on its roster and West Springfield has 24. Both coaches expect their freshmen class to step up with big swims this Friday.

Woodson’s fast freshmen class may have the edge though, led by state qualifier Leah Rogers and Rachel Ward. The Cavalier freshmen girls have scored as many as a third of the team’s points in meets early this season.

“The team came together this year and bonded really early,” Woodson Coach Brian Dufour said. “They want to do well for each other. They push themselves to be better for each other.”

Neither team has as many state qualifiers as it would like at this point in the season, but with the tight competition this meet is sure to produce, it might take a state-qualifying time to get first-place points on Friday.

So far, the Spartans boast two individual state qualifiers in Sean Mayer and Jacob Anderson, as well as the boys’ 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, which recently set a new team record.

For Woodson, Bo Ilgenfritz and Nathan Pease have met state qualifying times in the 100 breaststroke, along with two boys’ relays and Rogers, who met the qualifying time in the 100 butterfly earlier this season.

West Springfield has also qualified their 200 medley relay for the state meet, but Kellogg isn’t concerned at all.

“We have a number of girls who are right on the edge,” she said. “We’re hoping the great competition [Friday's] meet will bring will allow those girls to get the cut times they need.”

Watch for strong swims from freshman Robyn Dryer and junior Lauren Yi for West Springfield girls, and Jesse Kane and Colin Chartier for the Woodson boys. All four are close to state cuts.

The championship picture is becoming more clear now that teams have several meets under their belts. However, the dual meet season is just practice for area teams; district and divisional championships are not decided by dual meet records, so even undefeated teams know they need to keep training hard.

Woodson remains undefeated; beats TC Williams

*provided by Woodson Swim & Dive

Despite the long layoff over winter break, Woodson was able to rattle off 34 season’s best times to win 224-91 (boys), 213-99 (girls) over TC Williams.

The Cavalier boys and girls swept diving (1,2,3,4) with Eric Pavord and Samantha Eldridge each taking first. More than half of the divers recording season high scores.

James Chung (Woodson) recorded his first individual region time of the season in the boys’ 200 IM in 2 minutes 3.77 seconds.

Gloriya Mavrova won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Titans.

Leah Rogers (Woodson) easily eclipsed the region qualifying time in girls’ 200 IM (2:13.55), cutting nearly 2 seconds from her personal best.

Titans’ captain, senior Abby Cox scored a regional cut in the 200 IM (2:13.04), winning the event.

One of the standout performances of the night came form Katie McGraw (Woodson), who crushed her personal best time, dropping five seconds, in the girls’ 200 freestyle, and chopped 15 seconds off her previous best in the 500 freestyle for second place, behind Cox, a two-time state qualifier in the event.

Lawrence Lincoln (TC Williams) tied for first in the 50 free style and anchored the winning boys’ 400 freestyle relay.

Despite the dominance by Woodson, the meet ended with excitement. The last event of the night, the girls’ 400 free relay, was decided by .01, with TC edging out the Cavs. The team of A. Cox, Charlotte Sackett, Colleen Cox, and Mavrova set a team new record.

Next week will match the Woodson boys and girls (5-0) against the West Springfield Spartans (5-0, 5-0) in a meet that may very well determine the regular season titles for both.
