Gonzaga enters this week’s championship meets as one of the hottest teams in the area, coming off wins at the National Catholic and WMPSSDL championship meets. They will be tested this weekend at the Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championship. The Metros finals are Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center, where the best teams from Montgomery County, WMPSSDL, and DCIAA come together for one of the best collections of high school talent in on the East Coast.

Walter Johnson won the MCPS Division I Championship after a close meet with Churchill’s boys. Churchill girls beat Wootton and Whitman after placing first, third, and fourth in diving to give the Bulldogs a lead going into the swimming events.

Montgomery County Division I swim teams returned to the pool Saturday for their first competitive action of the new year — the relay carnival at Martin Luther King Swim Center. And while the meet does not factor into team standings, the razor-thin margin that separated the top two teams definitely increased the anticipation for the upcoming county and Metros meets.

Still riding high after an upset win over perennial power Good Counsel last February at Metros, the Churchill girls came into this season loaded with talent and widely considered a top contender to repeat as Montgomery County and Metros champions. But after suffering their first defeat in two years last Saturday against Whitman, the Bulldogs will be looking to rebound this week against Wootton.
